Multiband Compression

Why you gotta be so mean?
I just got Waves C4 and I have no idea how to use it. The band I am working with wants there CD LOUD, and I heard multiband comps can help out alot. I've been using the regular comp like Waves C1, but I'm wondering how to apply multiband to the entire track to make it louder. Any help would be great.

Waves C4 = Waves C1 * 4. :D

If you can use a compressor you can use a multiband. It's the same thing but it's like having 4 different compressors, each controlling only a certain frequency range.

You have 1 for bass, 1 for low-mids, one for high-mids, and one for highs. Like I said, if you already know how to use a compressor like the C1 then the rest should be pretty simple...and also entirely dependent on the dynamics of whatever song you're working on.
 
I think it's a limiter (like the L1, L2 or L3 if you have a Waves bundle) that you're talking about. Not that a compressor won't help you get some LOUDNESS.
 
Yeah I have limiters as well. I just wasn't sure which would get me loudness. And I still want it to sound good, with alot of bass drum, which doesn't sound to good with alot of limiting.
 
my recommendation...

read the C4 user's manual

load the C4 and with some source material spend several hours doing nothing but playing with each control and learn how it works.

that said, the C4's really not going to do what you need.

if your limiting is killing the bottom, then your mix needs fixing and you're limiting too much.
 
It's just that they want alot of bass drum, and they want it to be as loud as commercial CDs. And I've heard bands that have that before, just don't know how they do it.

Good luck getting it to commercial CD levels and still sound good. Not saying it isn't possible, but you can probably get pretty close.

Any chance of posting an MP3 of the song? It will be easier to tell then:

Otherwise, apart from reading tutorials on compressors (which you should do) there's nothing we can tell you about what settings to use, etc.

Yep, that's a pretty tall order. To get that kind of volume, you have to start at the tracking stage..............

Yeah, I did and it is loud they just want louder

the C4 could.
 
They say its not as loud as other bands cds. What do you think? I think it;s fine.
 
the kick needs to have more click and less bass to stand out more, but the whole mix seems to lack higher mids. Also you could do something with the sibilance of the vox.

I think the volume is just normal.
