Multi-Track Recorder... which to buy?

I'm really leaning towards the AW16G. One of my dads friends has a little home studio where he too uses the AW16G. He records local bands there.

Can you plug the AW16G into your computer, and dump files from it?

Thanks.

You have to dump them to disk as wav files. it only takes about 2 mins per song though. I let it burn them to disk while I'm setting up a song for it in my DAW

A wise choice, but here's a tip: download the simplified manuals at the 16G forum above and then allow yourself some time to get to know your new machine, slowly but surely. Just reyling on the Yamaha manual could overwhelm you since it's long and detailed, more than you need at first.
Things fall into place pretty quickly if you don't rush the process while reminding yourself at the first hint of frustration: what I'm taking time to learn now will be with me for many years to come, regardless of the machine I'm using. Keep the context clear, baby.

Sounds like you've made your choice -- but I use the Korg d1600mk11, and for the love of it, cast another vote in it's favor.

Yeah, but does the Korg unit come with an attached drink holder?

I didn't think so.

I had a 'G' and would give it my vote any day of the week. I'd still have it if it weren't for that darn tornado.

My vote is for the Yamaha AW16G.....though I don't have experience with the other referenced units.

My G has run like a top for 1 1/2 years, doesn't freeze, no latency, no skipping. Starts up quick. Intuitive routing. Great support group via www.dijonstock.com

Only two downsides from my perspective:

- Internal preamps are not so hot and you can not bypass them (I'm trying to figure out if the optical In's bypass the Yammy's internal pres's but I can't get it to work...most likely user ignorance).

- The internal effects, more specifically mastering presets are not very good.

As an Aw16G owner I can certainly concur with Bartman's assessment. Dollar for dollar, learnng curve, and allowing for the fact that 8 of the tracks are paired tracks...it's a no brainer that the 16G is a winner when it comes down to assessment of and comparisons of digital DAWs. The manual as supplied, however, does fall short on initial reading simply because it wasn't written and constructed as well as it should have been. Barring the less than clear manual...operation of the G is pretty much a no brainer.
