I just bought a new Shure ksm 27 and I'm concerned. My setup is:

Ksm 27 -----> DMP3 -----> Computer

The problem? It sounds extremely muddy! I'm really not sure why. I've recorded a lot with my Shure sm57, and have never had this problem. I will probably be able to get a clip up tomorrow, but it basically sounds like listening to someone on the radio. It's warm, not detailed, and just really unclean. Any ideas? Thanks guys.

Maybe try working a bit farther back? It's probably got more low end than the 57 at a given distance, and may not have as much prescence boost. Just a guess though.

The KSM27 has a 3-way rolloff switch.

Tried that? This will compensate for proximity effect.

yeah...

I've tried the rolloff. I'll have to try different mic placement I suppose.

You could be hearing a lot more of the room. If the room doesn't sound good that won't help.

This may sound stupid but do you have the mic oriented in the correct position with the Shure logo facing you and the roll-off switch towards the rear?
