Hi,

I put a couple of drops of thin oil in the capstan of my MS16. After a few seconds when the oil was sucked in, it started doing a cracking noise like for 10 minutes. I left it on and about an hour after the noise was gone. Is this normal ? what was that sound ? anyone knows ? was it ok to oil it at all ? it wasn't broken or making any noises before, i wonder if that was a mistake, one of the cases of trying to fix something that wasnt broken.../ Well now there is no noise, but for a minute i was thinking it was the end of my MS16. any experiences with those motors ?

thanks

You should ask this in the Analog Only forum where there are a bunch of TASCAM tape recorder users...but as you mentioned...it is questionable that the capstan even needed oiling.
Not all capstans do.
My Otari does...but my Fostex doesn't.
If your manual makes no mention of oiling...then I would not do it.

The "crackling"....mmmmm....sounds like something might have been shorting if the oil acted as a conductor...?
Any burning smell...specifically electrical burning smell?

well, too late, i already did. The noise is a cracking, like some mechanical noise, not electrical. A slight grinding noise, it is now gone, but it was there for the first 30 mins or so, wondering why ?
