Pain in the ass
My ms 16 fast forwards and rewinds really slowly. When I spin the wheel on the left (looking at it from the front) with my hand it spins freely one direction but hard the other way. Right now it is in an unheated space so its cold (around 35). Any ideas?

The resistance to the reel table spinning in one direction is normal as this is all part of the braking and tension system of the deck.

The slow fast-winding speed is a different matter. 35 degrees is pretty dang chilly! Even pro studios with air-conditioned machine rooms don't run that cold so, that might be a factor? Sticky shed tape could be another as it's widely known that when a tape is in that condition, it offers serious resistance to winding or playing.

If you have a fresh, new tape to try it with, that could at least tell you if its a tape related issue or not.

If the fresh new tape shows the same behavior then changing the temp in the room would be the next test to see if that has an effect.

If new tape and more normal room temps are still giving the same results, then the winding speed adjustment pots could be tweaked to see if that brings it around. Also make use of the service manual to check the factory spec on what fast wind speeds are supposed to be versus what your getting.

I believe its 6:15 to spool a tape at 80 ips and the fast wind speed is supposed to be 240 ips or 2 minutes for a 2500 ft roll. Time yours to see how much its off.

Cheers! :)
