As much as I hate trying to speak for someone else (though I do it frequently :D ), I'm fairly confident in my opinion that Dave vehemently disagrees with what was stated by treble hook.

Correct gain staging, I believe was his quote.
I left you a present in return.... You'll know when you check your user cp...

read what i posted, do the test, if the test fails ill send you 100.00
please everyone, find a good artical about gain structure, the whole signal chain .... taking the mr8 pres out, and you are right back to a track with a week signal....

DO THE TEST record both ways and look at the wav form on the computer, anyprogram will, do any free version will show it...

OK, I did some drum recordings yesterday. Signal Chain as follows.

Mics into Behringer UB1202 Mixer, Main outs from Mixer >1/4" cables into the MR-8.

I set the gain to clip on all the mics on the mixer then backed off. When I go to set the gain on the pres on the MR 8, I can't even use them without clipping. The trim knobs on the MR8 ended up being turned to "maybe" the 1st "dot" on the MR8 trim knob.

So in effect, going this route w/ a Mixer, you arent even really using the MR8 preamps it seems?

Am I setting/hooking this up wrong? MR8 is set to LINE/MIC on the back.

I understand about gain staging, but it seems you would end up using more of the MR8 preamps from statements in this thread----to get proper "gain-staging" . Could someone shed some more light on this?

Thank you

Sorry :o

I am guessing that the way you are setting your levels would be correct. How were the results?

The results seem to sound ok (which is what matters most!)

The WAV peaks seem a little low still, but like I said I could barely use the MR8 pres without clipping the signal peaks.

If I am using the UNBAL/GUITAR inputs on the MR8, even though the signal is coming from the mixer (1/4" TRS cables out from Mixer to 1/4" in on the MR8), should I be setting the MR8 to "guitar" on the back?
I currently use the "LINE/MIC" setting...

Yep, I'd think you'd want it on "line/mic". I usually remain as ambiguous as possible when I'm answering question, because I am usually the one asking them. In other words, don't quote me.

Best guess- line/mic.
