Hey, if everyone is running direct thru the mixer the only mics you would need would be one for the bass drum and one overhead on the drums. Would that work? I'm askin cause I'm wanting to do the same thing.
Well, (s'cuse me, couldn't help over-reading) You'll want to mic the guitar cab, too, as soon as you realize the difference 'tween that and recording it direct, that is. But yep, a mono drum scene totally works. I made a shockmount for
my AT871-R boundary mic (ebay, $20.00), and hang it over the drum kit. Sounds great. In fact, it gets the whole room pretty well, too! Welcome to the Blue-Note School of Recording! Add a kick-drum mic, a 57 for the guitar cab, run the bass direct (you'll get bleed form the drum OH also), run 'keys' direct too.... you're set. You can always "Re-Amp" the direct signals when you're mixing, after the fact, so you can get the
sound of moving air for that stuff, too.
*Re-amping is re-recording a signal that you: Send
back from the hard-drive (tape, whatever recording medium you're using) back through the mixer to a speaker cab, etc; stick a microphone in front of it, and record That signal back again into your system.
