On the MR-8, can you backup the individual tracks of a song via USB to a PC and save them (the file) on the PC to be loaded back via USB for further work on the MR-8?

If so, I guess the backup file on the PC could be filed to a CD for storage AND, if that is case, the file could be emailed to someone else with an MR-8 for loading on their unit? I hope, I hope, I hope

Yes. Download the free "wavemanager" utility from Fostex' website. If you are only using the PC for storage it will probably be no problem transfering back to the MR8, but if you use any multi-tracking/editing software, you may have to change the file name back to that which the MR8 uses (I think it is .tr01, .tr02, etc., corresponding to where you want it). I know N-track changes the name of the .wav file, and this has caused me some gray hairs before I knew...

Don't see why not...

Thanks Cellardweller. Seems like the MR-8 offers a lot for the price

I have to agree. The MR-8 is a hell of a good tool for the price. I am enjoying mine. I will upgrade the CF card but for the average guitarist/hobbist you cant go wrong. Maybe when I become a better player or join another band Ill get a bigger unit but for now, you cant beat them for the money

mr8

ther only other thing to look out for is you have to make sure you and you buddy are using the mr8 in the same mode, normal mode, or extended but you both have to have the same settings(extended mode sucks not really good for anything but transfering to analog tape)

dont forget the .wav at the end of your file name tr01.wav

Yes yes. Thank you Dave. I knew it was something like that...

BTW, isn't there a limitation to the transferability of tracks recorded in "Extended" mode? I thought the only way you could "transfer" Ext. mode recording was to actually record them to tape...

huh huh, he said "bigger unit".

files

you have a good point, i think they do have to be 16 bit 144 mono files for wav manager to accept them, correct? which means you could not get them back to the mr8. So i guess extended mode is out....

(dooooughhhh) cant beleive i forgot that. someone here said they are making cds with extended mode also, but i think thats imposible unless you burn streight from the audio, not digitally or maybe make them into mp3's somehow???

I don't see why you couldn't email your files,if they are small enough. If the files are to large you may have to compress them which may cause a loss in quality.

file size

should be kind of big for some isp's to handel in email,

FTP works the best, lots of free software out there, just have to set up an ftp site somewhere...

You could convert the wav's to mp3's and send them (direct connect through aim works well if you both have a good connection) and your buddy could convert the mp3 back to a wav, with a free program you could find on download.com. I do this with my buddy sometime and it works okay.

mp3

while this file conversion will work, it is a lossy form of compression. Too much information lost that way for any serious recording....

but if its just for fun why the heck not..

FTP is really the best way , and its pretty easy too...
