Mpx 200

I'm trying to record my bass tracks using the lexicon Mpx 200 multi effects processor on to audio desk. I've tried several settings on compression and it does even out the tones but I can't seem to get it the sound right, its not very up front and punchy which is how I would like it. Anyone have any tips for recording bass using the mpx 200 or a similar effects processor. Any help would be great.
 
Sorry my friend, but I don't think you're going to get the compression you're looking for with that unit. I have a couple of them and as compressors, they make a good paper weights.
 
Obviously it's going to depend on what else you are running the signal through as well Preamp/DI etc. I actually use a Behringer Composer Pro for compression and I have been very pleased with the effect on my bass sound. It seems to be one of the only bits of Behringer gear given the time of day around here, and for £55 you cant go wrong...it even has pretty lights!

I have a MPX 200 but i've actually bothered trying the compressor in it. Some great other effects though, if a little lacking in the editing capabilities.
 
how else can i make the mpx 200 sound good

Would a DI box really help? I thought if i was going through an effects unit I didn't need one. With pre amps are there any good ones that work well with bass as well as voice. ?

A direct box lowers a high-impedance signal from a bass guitar to a mic-level signal for feeding to a mixing desk. It also changes an unbalanced signal to a balanced signal.

There are a lot of preamps that work as a direct box for guitars and as a mic preamp for microphones. It depends how big your budget is and what features you need/want.

A good direct box is another good option- you can feed it right into your mixing desk.

Thanks for your help. I did some research and I think I'm gona go with getting a mic pre it seems like it will help a little more. But I'm still diciding on which one. I went to Samash.com and found these three that looked pretty good. Presonus Blue Tube 149.95, M Audio Tampa 629.00 and Focusrite Penta mic pre 399.99. What I'm trying to decide is which would be better for my budget and what I need. Just from reading the specs the M Audio Tampa is probably the best, But I don't really know enouph to know what the best for the price would be.. The Blue Tube dosn't have a built in compressor like the other two, but if i used that in conjunction with my MPX200 compression would that be enouph or is the mpx really that bad for compression? Do you guys have an opinon on these three choices or maybe a recomendation that I missed? My budget I would like to stay around the price of the Blue tube, and the M audio tampa would be my limit. Also if there is a place that is better for purchasing this equiptment let me know. Thanks so much for your help.
 
I use a Blue Tube and a Blue Max for bass. Fairly decent. But I'm not really satisfied with it. When I mix in my bass, it always seems to be a bit muddy. If that's your budget, you'll get some useable bass tracks with the BT. But...since you have an upper budget limit, use it. You won't regret it when you start some serious mixing. I've got a feeling that the Avalon U5 would be seriously good for bass. The U5 and a Behringer compressor (Composer or Autocom) would be at right about your budget cap. Spend the money. You'll upgrade later anyway if you don't.
 
You could also investigate the Line6 Bass POD. I see a lot of them about these days, could fulfill all your needs in one.

I should add that I don't own one, am just saying what I have heard...Iam thinking of investing in one though.
