ok, so i'm takin my .wav file and encoding it to .MP3 so i can post it in the "mp3 clinic" here. when i'm in the "save as" window and i've selected MP3, it has another drop down menu called "file attributes". an example of one would be "Layer 3, 44100Hz, stereo, 128 kb/s".

what should i choose?? i realise the trade off between size of file and quality. i'm gonna be posting this stuff on NWR and so i don't want a 10mb file for a 3 min song ok? but i dont want the grainy nasty sound that i get when i encode to mp3. so what setting must i chose??

cheers,
MD

ps does the prog that i'm using to encode matter?

"layer 3" refers to mp"3" if im not mistaken- a type of mpeg compression- seems like most of the stuff i download off the net is mp3 128kb/s- I dont know about the sample rate- whats standard- but sound like you got it about right- software doesnt matter as long as it creates an mp3- a three minute song should be roughly 2-3mb- if im wrong im sure someon will correct me- give it a try using a few differnt setting until youve reached an acceptable middle ground- size vs. quality

MPEG Layer-3 refers to the third revision of MP3.

The codec you use matters a great deal. Some codecs simply suck ass.

LAME is the best 'free' MP3 encode available.

44.1KHz is standard for samplerate. 128kbps CBR is average accepted quality.

A lot of people use 192 kbps. Seems to be a nice compromise between size & quality :)

I do layer3,44.1K,stereo,192kbps

a 3 minute song @ 192kbps would be about 4 MB.......

well i fiddled around with the program, and found the same as you - that 194kb/s is the best. but if the layer-3 refers to the file being and mp3, what happens if i put it has layer-4 or layer-2 ??

it uses a different less common compression- last i heard mp4 was "divx" a boot leg format used in video on the net- maybe im thinkin of something else- anyway- never hurts to try!- (i think mp2 yields larger files)

mpeg 4 is a video compression format, and DIVX is a cracked version of the commercial codec, commonly used on DVDs.

LAYER is a different identifier however.

Use Layer-3, and you will be safer, as the mp3 will be supported under many more players.
