Any recommendations, or something to avoid? Or are they all pretty much the same?

Audacity is freeware, but you need to download the LAME encoder separately (for legal reasons) if you're going to add mp3 functionality to it. It's easy to do, and you only have to download both once.

LAME, for sure. It seems universally regarded as giving the best quality, especially using the preset quality settings (I use "-V2").

Yup. I've always just used the LAME encoder, and I haven't noticed any problems with it. Works great.

Where's the 'official' place to get the LAME encoder?

I don't want to get spoofed into something that just 'looks' real, ya know what I mean?

Nobody uses Pyro? I would have thought that would be the most popular.

Thanks.

Oh, and I realized too late that I should have put this in the computer forum instead. Didn't want to get get burned at the stake for cross-posting, though.

LAME is great as an encoder, but the command line interface can be somewhat complicated sometimes. My recommendation would be to use a program called CDex, which is a ripping/encoding/decoding program built around the LAME engine. Download it here:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos/

I've been using it for years and have had no problems and have been getting excellent quality.

CDEX and EAC are not mp3 encoders - they are audio rippers, and need to use 3rd party software to encode the file. So you still need to pick an encoder to go with them, although you could just use whatever default one they supply.
