Direct outs are after the preamp, that's what is coming 'direct out,' the preamped mic.

Here I was speaking of guitar processor outs or keyboard out, what-have you. I guess I didn't make that one very clear... :)

The reason a board is so great in a home studio is because you can get (as stated above) 12 decent to good preamps for cheap. I got an M12, 12 good preamps, for 590. If I want to pick up a RNP it costs me about that much, and that's for 2. I plan on buying some stand alones in the future for some nice vocal channels or something, but costs are costs, and I can't shell out a ton of money to buy 10 stand alone pres.

Very true, but if you have some change to spend, rack-mount preamps make for a much neater/space conscious studio. unless you go all out on your board... If done right, you never see a wire from a nice board...

Also, boards provide great routing for when you're recording for making headphone mixes and adding effects that you won't be recording (reverb, etc).

Very true again... I guess for my purpose, no board suits me just fine, but there are advantages as you have stated. I myself will stick without a board until I get my real studio up and running. Once that happens, I don't think you can get around having a board. Thanks for the insight!

The 828II, has alot of 'mixer' built in. It can even function as a standalone--racked digital mixer..... Can route headphone mixes to different outputs.... Only thing it is missing is decent pres...

What is "change to spend?" I've never had that before... ;)

The delta 1010 does this as well.

What is Change to spend?

Change to spend (n):
  1) The ammount of money left in your pockes to feed your family after purchasing your 5 new ADATS
  2) A figure directly relating to your checking account while contemplating that Soundcraft board
  3) (Form of a question) SM57 or Neuman...

What I meant is that you can use the thing without a computer. It is a real digital mixer. All of its controls can be accessed from the front panel.

You can create four separate submix's with it or the software, with diferent levels set, etc........

You have to admit, that's pretty slick... Not very practical, but pretty stinking cool...

HOWEVER #2--
The MOTU boxes DO include an app, AudioDesk. It's just not their best app (Digital Performer). And again, both apps are Mac only, they do not include PC software, apart from the drivers.

Charger,
The cue mix works on the PCs though, huh..?? Hope so :)
