Most UNDERRATED!!!

There must be a distiction between "highly rated" and "highly popular".
How many kids down at the local GC do you think have ever heard of Junior Brown? He is very highly rated by what I would call the more "mature" guitarists, but he's never been popular enough to be known by anyone else.
I think what we're looking for are guitarists who we think should be more popular because they are so highly rated by guitarists who know of them.

Or maybe not.

Junior Brown plays that slide-telecaster thing that he built himself I think. Yeah, he rocks...Hendrix meets George Jones!!!

I remember that show "Thicke of the Night" with Alan Thicke before he was on Growing Pains. That was back when I was in high school.

How about Tom Scholz...you dont hear much about him
Gary Pihl, he used to play with Sammy Hagar before Sammy joined VH. I think Gary played with Boston for a while.

Gotta post a followup on my comments about The New Bohemians guitarist, Kenny Withrow.

I emailed John Bush of the New Bohemians to get a straight answer about what happened regarding the overdub of "What I Am"... here's part of his reply:

"no that's not correct. your guitar player has got it confused. there was some guitar on the songs circle and now that was done after we left without us knowing it, but the guitar on what i am is all kenny withrow."

My ass stands corrected.:D

P.S. It still sucks that the label would lay down tracks without letting the band in on it, but if anyone follows the New Bohemians hassle with their (previous) label.... I guess it's par for the course.

I am verklempft. Go ahead and talk amongst yourselves.

What an original thread topic. ;)

Here's some definitely underrated guitarists:

Steve Vai
Eddie Van Halen
Jimi Hendrix
Eric Clapton
Jimmy Page
Yngwie Malmsteen
Andrés Segovia
Me

:p

King Elvis — Yeah, that instrument is something he calls a Guit-Steel, and he works it like it's part of his body or something!

Aaron Cheney — I agree. I think there's a confusion of terms in these discussions, one which I'm definitely prone to committing. A guitarist's rating — how is that defined? Is it a matter of standing in the community of musicians? Or is it related to popularity amongst the listening masses? It seems to me that we're really talking about the latter. That's why I threw in the word "overlooked" earlier. Someone like Rick Nielsen is probably well respected by fellow musicians, but he doesn't get much in the way of notice from laymen (so to speak).

For example, in the "Overrated Bassist" thread Nikki Six was mentioned. Does anyone seriously think that he's overrated by fellow bassists and other players? But by the fans, sure he's overrated. That's why the lousy year-end polls all the guitar mags have aren't worth shit. Those polls are just people voting for their favorite artists, regardless of ability. But then again, the average fan doesn't really know good music, either, so what can you expect?

I say this all the time, but art is not about competition, or at least it shouldn't be.

Are you drunk? Every one of these dudes has held the title of top dog at some point. Odds are each still rates in the top 100. Feel free to clarify what under-rated means. Does the pope need to appoint sainthood?

Most Underrated:

Derik Frigo (Enuff Z Nuff)
Vito Bratta (White Lion)
Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme)
Jimmy Olander (Diamond Rio)

nuno! yeah!!! bad timing for him.. Extreme become known right when shred was becoming dead.

Vito? I don't know about that. I thought he was more or less an EVH clone with a steingberger.

jerry reed - people used to know he was good.
snakefinger - look him up
eric johnson - scariest player of all time
monty montgomery - what the hell is he doing?
leslie west - first time that sound ever appeared.
adrian belew - used to get a lot of run.
andy summers - was in sting's shadow, but played very original

More under-rated guitarists:
David Wilcox
Alvin Lee
John Mcloughlin
Lindsay Buckingham
Charlie Christian (God's Right Hand)
Frank Zappa
Wes Montgomery
(I would as usual, sign this...-Richie, but somebody would think I actually thought I belong in this crowd)

Under rated...

You'll think I'm crazy, but remember a Japanese Metal band called "Loudness"? The guitarist was Akira Takasaki, had my favorite guitar sound of all the 80's metal bands, and what a player! He did a solo album that was like a study of guitar with all different styles called Tusk of Jaguar, jamming in weird scales with Japanese instruments. I think he's really inventive and versatile.

It's great to see another person who appreciates Enuff Z'nuff's GREAT music.
Their original lead guitarist (Gino Martino) is a good friend of mine. His real name is actually Gene Strenz.
He and two partners own a guitar store in a South-suburb of Chicago. They do all the work on my guitars.

Gene is a class act and an awesome guitarist!
I think he belongs on this list, too.

Ben harper for sure,

but not in the "spider fingers" super fast solo way if you know what i mean. he does throw out a good solo though if its called for!!

Good thread, but slightly overated

I have to go with Paul Simon.

His acoustic guitar playing was outstanding.

Listen to Simon and Garfunkles Bookends.

Beast from the East!!!! Hell yeah!!! I also have the follow up album, can't remember what it was called...

Yes,many good calls, many favorites of mine but Frank Zappa was
the most important one to me.I'll be the first in line to rip off licks
from all my favorites but Frank gave us a glimpse of how to turn a mere guitar solo into something that has a life of it's own.

Hendrix backing Duo

His Bassist and Drummer were as amazing as he was. Just take a little time and listen to his albums and hear the crazy things they're doing. Sadly after Hendrix died they sorta just faded away. Geeves.
