My two favourite guiatrists of all time are Mark Knopfler and Lindsay Buckingham.
Just my two cents......

I think that Richie Kotzen and Jason Becker are way underrated. They are incredibly gifted both in their technique and in their "musicality".

Richie Kotzen is a string strangler for sure. Very "Eddie" like.

yeah, far too many much heralded guitarists that I assume you all think aren't given their due because they haven't been rated into the stratosphere.

my votes, James Taylor, Steve Bartek and Warren Fitzgerald.

Brain May...

You probably meant to write BrIAn May instead or BrAIn May.... then again, Brain suits him much better. ;)

I don't know about that. From what I read, he was a chronic manic depressive. What he needed was help and probably not any more pressures from success. Either way, the guy kicked serious ass. I still marvel at his Austin City Limits show when he does the bottle slide with a full bottle! And then cleans up the neck with a towel as he's playing!

Wow, I never heard about that. That's sad. Wish I could have got to see him before he died. I have not seen any video either.

"the guitarist had no idea that they ditched his solo on "What I Am" and brought in another guitarist until he heard the song on the radio."

No way! I wonder which guy I saw in concert, because he was amazing and played that song like it was his, as well as other stuff, including some very tasty accoustic. He sort of reminded me of a next generation Steve Howe.

That, I can't tell you... maybe they ditched their original guitarist... or maybe he split after hearing what the producers did (and maybe finding out the band was in on it)... who knows... maybe he learned to play someone elses riffs after the album was released. It was a kinda cool riff, as I remember.

Here's how I found out: I was living in Houston at the time, and one of our guitarists went up to Dallas where he met the dude (sorry, I never knew his name). It was shortly after the album was released, I seem to remember. We were kinda blown away, really. We all thought it was tasteless that he found out by hearing the song on the radio.

Imagine this scenario... he's at home with his family, listening to the radio... just knowing that song will get played any minute. He's got the family all around to hear the DJ lead into the song...

The song finally comes on, and the family is listening, nodding their heads and tapping their feet... then here comes the solo.

"Here it comes!" he announces with pride.

But his face turns to horror as he realizes it is not him playing the solo. It's not even someone else playing his solo. It's someone else playing someone else's solo!

And the family keeps nodding and tapping...

"That's a wonderful solo, Son!" says Dad.

"I liked it, too!" chimes in Mom.

And he slips away to his room to visit his buddy, Jack Daniels.

There are a lot of country players that are just MONSTERS!!! Have you ever heard "The Claw" by Jerry Reed?? It'll send ya running for cover. I think he played it on a gut string acoustic!!!

I was on a huge Jerry Reed kick last month. The Claw kicks ass. I also like his vocal style... when you're hot you're hot!!!

I have always loved his stuff. A lot of people probably just think he is an actor, but, man...
He does great story type songwriting and his guitar playing is fantastic. I have an out of print album of his from the 70's and on it is a song called "Carribean" its a vocal song but he takes 2 guitar breaks in it and whoa buddy!!!! He is just AWSOME, all fingerpicking stuff!!! Just listen to "East Bound and Down" for some great Nashville lead pickin!!!! There is a cool story that Elvis Presley was gonna cover one of Jerry's songs called "Guitar Man" back in '68. They tried it in the studio and it wouldnt work because Elvis's guitar players couldnt get Jerry's playing down. Elvis just says, "we need Jerry to play on it" so they track Jerry down, and he was on a fishing trip out on some river somewhere. They tell him. "Elvis wants YOU to play on his record" So Jerry drives, I dont know how many hundred miles to get there and plays on the cut and it is a great Elvis record because of Jerry's playing!!!

Joey Santiago from the Pixies (and later appearing on Frank Black's solo albums).

I would agree with whoever said Brian May.

I would agree w/ Neal Schon.

How about Dominic Miller? Absolutely tasteful.

There was a band that was featured on Garageband.com call "Chain Poets". I don't even know the dude's name, but wow, can he play!
