Most overpaid and underskilled guitarists....

The '80s are over, let go, nobody listens to hair band wanking guitar solo butt rock.

I didn't like U2 at the time, and I'm still not a big fan, but the most important guitar song of the '80s was Where The Streets Have No Name, not because of the intro or the coda, but because of Edge's riffs during the verses. Somehow Edge's minimalist playing makes Bono's histrionics tolerable. It's a miraculous feat. Compare and contrast with Vai and Sheehan with David Lee Roth.

Despite all the talk about emotion in guitar solos, this really has nothing to do with technique, although technique is rarely a vehicle for effective conveyance of emotion. Music is communication of experience, and the experience communicated by most technical guitar music is ego, which is off-putting to most listeners.

So shred if you like, but you won't attract a wide audience, not because people have no taste, but simply because they're not interested in your message.

And yes, the White Stripes are passe. Cool people listen to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Or is it the Vines this week? I can't keep up.

Willie Nelson

RPE!

You dont know a lot about willie.LOL..He's a mean jazz and blues guitarist......you have to go deeper than his few radio friendly tunes to know what this man is about musically.Have you ever saw/heard him sit and play a guitar by himself? He's got some hella mean chops.

The man can play many styles of guitar Fluently.

i can't really agree with you on saying that billie joe from green day is over rated. in fact he's pretty damn good since he hadn't taken a lesson, plus he admits he lets mike and tre do the showing off when it comes to playing in green day.

Clapton?

You obviously didn't hear him on his most recent tour. He's come full circle. Full blown blues. I've seen them all, Jimi, Duane, Jimmy, SRV, and Clapton at the HP Pavillion in San Jose just blew the roof off. His guitar solos have never sounded better.

I hadn't heard him since 1968 and never got into his playing that much. I missed the Beano roots.

But at the HP, he'd just close his eyes, tilt his head towards heaven and really, start to shred. I was floored. My jaw dropped.

Place him number one ASAP.

my list may be a little newer than some of the others but these people are still highly paid for some reason i dont know why.

lead guitar from Matchbox twenty
Train
Avril Lavigne
the strokes
the hives
michelle branch
wyclef jean
simple plan
yellow card

i dont have them in any particular order.

q: How many guitarists does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

A: Six.....1 to screw it in and 5 to stand there with their arms folded saying how much better they could have done it.

Satch

1. Tom Delonge - Blink 182
2. Kurt Cobain - Nirvana
3. Billy Joe Armstrong - Green Day
4. Carlos Santana
5. John Mayer
6. Clapton
7. Pete Townshend
8. George harrison

Satch, Vai, Johnson.......those are the good players

John Mayer, Eric Clapton, George Harrison...untalented? I usually don't get into this type of stuff, but come on. You can't put Bill Joe from Greenday and Tom Delonge on the same list as those guys. Like somebody said earlier, a lot of these guys do what's right for the song. I don't want to start anything here, and I'm not denying these guys are talented, but I just can't listen to Petrucci for more than 30 seconds, and I'm a guitar player

John Mayer went to Berklee in Boston, and I know...don't put too much stock in that stuff, but they don't just let anybody into that place. He's a VERY good guitar player. Ever heard the song "Neon"? Why do Clapton and Buddy Guy and all these blues legends keep inviting him to play?

As for Clapton and George Harrison...well you can quibble all you want about who did what in the Beatles, but George Harrison is still a great guitarist. And I have to disagree that Paul did all the solos. Go back to the early stuff...anything creative on the guitar back then was done by George.

Clapton's natural, unconscious playing and his resume speak for themselves.

I'll admit that no one makes your jaw drop like SRV or Satriani, but you just cannot call these guys untalented.

What about that "bandages" song who the hell is that? There is a whole brigade of white stripe sounding bands out. Must be the flavor of the year for the labels.

Think how much money they save in production;)
