Ok well I hear that big time professiona studios have mics that cost like $20,000. Like say Dr.Dre's studio...

Well I've heard this forever but never ever ever ever ever heard of or seen a Neumann even that costed that much!

The most expensive mic I've seen is a Neumann U87 for near $3,000.

Anyone know if this is a rumor or what?

Whats the deal with this?

Ok I just found a Neumann U47

that someone paid $4,500 for...

Can ya top that?

Ok found some more...

Neumann Solution D-01 Digital Microphone
Price: $13,999.99

Manley Reference Stereo Gold Microphone
Price: $7,200.00

The Brauner VMA Variable Pattern Tube Mic
Price: $7,650.00

Wow...

Thanks... yeah it looks like that Neumann Solution D mic is usually sold for like $17,000 ...

Crazy...

I would love to record on some of these expensive mics with the proper setup and see and hear the sound quality... For that price... it better be the best...

Now I see condensor large and small diaphrams, ribbon mics, tube mics... shiet... i need to learn the different between all the diff mics...

Yeah Gefell is another expensive name... $11,000 yeah thats a lot for a mic... I'm having a problem paying $500 for a mic! Whheww :wipes sweat off forhead:

Those are some wacky prices, to be sure! Luckily, modern production techniques have opened the door for new companies to design and build affordable microphones that sound the same.

tryptophan are you the a-hole that gave me bed rep for my last post?

I know it is not a single mic. But it is still a cool setup.

"What he posted was an array system. NOT a single mic."

They DON't sound the same.

There is NO cheap chinese mic that will EVER sound like a Nuemann U47, an AKG C12 or an Ela M251. PERIOD!

The engineering on those mics we serious achievements in design which are expensive to copy and require serious attention to detail! Not to mention a VF14 tube is nearly impossible to find and will cost you $1500 when you DO find one. The capsule for the C12 and Ela M are about $3000 by themselves and not one chinese company makes a copy.

The diaphragm of a LDC mic looks simple but to make a really good one is extremely difficult. Te original U47 has a PVC membrane which suffers from aging and when you replace it by mylar the mic don't sound like before.

The capsule looks a little bit like a very small snare drum and snare drums don't sound the same as we all know. Different head, different sound, different tension, different sound.

You can find an interesting post of Bruce Swedien about U47's at Harmony Central at Craig Anderton's board.

I believe the technical term for this post is a "troll"

Not to mention venting, membrane thickness and whether its center or edge terminated...

this is the only other mic(pair of mics, rather) I want and actually drool over. I would never pay over 5gs for a mic. Anything after 5 grand isnt about quality, its about name and antique value. while its true that the cheap chinese stuff will never sound as good as the old neumanns, I think the liklihood of a 3-5G mic sounding as good as a 20g mic is certainly possible. I cant think of any parts, labor or anything else that would justify a price point of over 5g.....
I also know some engineers that can make a pair of octavas and a behringer used for a whole album sound better than a whole studio worth of stuff. its all about knowing how to use it. :D

maybe one day i will get those mics. need a promotion though.
