Most expensive Mic...

The most expensive mic I think I've seen for sale was an old Telefunken ELA M251 on eBay for like $12k. I don't know what it wound up going for. I think the most expensive new single mic (not an array or anything) is the Brauner VM1 Klaus Heyne Edition at $10k.

There is NO cheap chinese mic that will EVER sound like a Nuemann U47, an AKG C12 or an Ela M251. PERIOD!

To each, his own.

Ok well I hear that big time professiona studios have mics that cost like $20,000. Like say Dr.Dre's studio...

Well I've heard this forever but never ever ever ever ever heard of or seen a Neumann even that costed that much!

The most expensive mic I've seen is a Neumann U87 for near $3,000.

Anyone know if this is a rumor or what?

Whats the deal with this?

Isn't Dre's go-to mic a Sony C800G? They aren't $20,000. Not even close.

amazing that someone can charge that for a mic. absolutely amazing. I respect Klaus' knowledge a great deal, but seeing those prices just amazes me. I couldnt charge that much in good conscience. I guess the market demands it though. Thank God I chose spaudio instead to do my mic modifications. I suspect I have saved at least the price of a new car by doing so. :D

i think he's thinking of master P.
i remember him having some 20,000$ whatever.
hmmmm........ i'l try to google it.

no luck, i remember some hype about his expensive mic though.

That Shure SM33 sold for $50,000 used. A previous owner etched his name on it--definitely not mint condition. The frequency response is only 40-15,000Hz, plus it's got a weird presence peak: http://www.coutant.org/sm33/

I guess I'll have to increase my budget. I'll need to find better specs. Does anyone know where I can get a better mic? I need a matched pair, but I don't wanna spend more than like, $250,000

I have a matched pair of Beta 57s I'm selling for that :D

I use a Neumann M149 in my home studio....the difference between the expensive mics (3000+) and <3000 mics is clarity of sound + warmth. The differences aren't huge to the average ears, but there is that little special thing about expensive mics that when you put what you recorded into a mix, its amazing. It basically mixes itself...

Thats my take on it

Rather than go to a web only store (where there's not even a showroom you can visit) I'd suggest going and looking at some of these mics in person. There's a detail in workmanship in a lot of these high end mics that you can see in person that usually won't be revealed by an online catalog. The experience of seeing, touching and hearing some of these expensive mics helps one understand their value.

I've gotten to be around some nice mics. The high end mic I lust for tends to be anything made by Soundfield. Very, very nice.
