This was kinda inspired by "gunslinger" thread.

Who has the most enviable/sought after guitar tone? I'm mostly curious about hardrock/metal/nu-metal/ACM distorted tones, but please feel free to name any who differ from this...

ME!!!!!

or maybe not...but I did get an absolutely kickass tone out of my rig last night!

stephen carpenter has an awesome sound.

the guys from glassjaw have a great sound as well. they play like goddamn machines but their sound sounds fucking unwieldly

they actually call this "guitar tone"?

I'm always open to learning new terminology :) . If I have erred, please do correct me.

I am, after all, a perpetual n00b, as I've seen in someone elses title.... :o

Linkin Park or stinkin fart as i call them. Think they use Messa Boogie and PRS. Suppose if you have that set up it would be pretty easy to get a brilliant guitar tone.

Reminds me of a joke:

How many guitar players does it take to cover a Stevie Ray Vaughn tune?

Apparently, all of them.

David Gilmour, Adam Jones, Brian May.

I can't believe someone said Linkin Park. As far as heavy tones, I'd say Alice In Chains (Jerry Cantrell), Adam Jones, and Dillinger Escape Plan.
I also recently heard a band called Between the Buried and Me that had a pretty righteous heavy guitar tone. Also, the Metallica Black Album tones are pretty nice.

hardrock: i'd have to go with the guitar sounds on lateralus by tool. absolutely amazing sounds

metal: not too sure. i know the more popular pickup/amp setups are humbuckers into a marshall or mesa. if using the mesa it has to be with a diode rectifier. the tube rectifier won't allow a fast enough attack for the hammer-ons. look into EMGs for pickups. personally i like the tone from As I Lay Dying on Frail Words Collapse (Fernandes guitars into Mesa Boogie amps).

nu-metal: um i don't even want to touch this. i personally think most of it is horrible music.

ACM: i still can't get over this label. most of the time its a les paul into a marshall jcm900 or mesa dual rectifier. you'll also see a few tele's but hardly ever a strat. look into Blindside. i know simon uses a les paul most of the time into a peavy 5150.

to be honest. as much as i love some of that music i don't consider it spectacular tone. i like the sound i get out of my tele/fender princeton reverb much better. the metal is good for its riffs and the ACM is good for its passionate lyrics. but if i want to listen to tone i've got other stuff that sounds better.

Duane Allman if you don't know who he is forget it
and go google Ministry

The tones on the Strokes first album were absolutely gorgeous. Those are my faves for rhythm.

For lead tones, Allan Holdsworth is the standard bearer.

...totally forgot; Zeppelin! Jimmy Page was a genius at getting great tones in the studio.

ah... i didnt know that. sucks :(

hopefully it doesnt change the band dynamic too much.

brian may
billy gibbons (zz top)
and of course angus young, even though we all know how to get that sound doesnt mean its not what most people want to have their rig sound like when they start playing guitar.

i thought they only had one guitar player and the other guy was just a hired gun and didn't play on either of the last 2 records.

It has always been Beck and Darly, but for the last two albums Todd has been just as big as part of Glassjaw as each of them.

Guitar Tones Of Envy

Let's see.........
Metallica: Master Of Puppets, ...And Justice For All, Metallica (Black Album)
Ministry: The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste, Psalm69, Filth Pig
Slayer: Seasons In The Abyss, Diabolus In Musica, God Hates Us All

To me, that's some of the best EVER guitar playing!!!!! :)
