"More To This" Marc Scibillia cover

Hello , I ran into this song on Social Media and couldn't get it out of my head . I thought I may as well try and cover it and see what happens.
It's still a little rough around the edges and needs some further close up editing but , I'm pretty happy with the main structure.
I used "SpaceBlender" by "SoundToys" on the cellos. Awesome "free" reverb plugin for a Very limited time. If you have time take a look at it. Great at Everything I've thrown at it.
Any suggestions for improvement will be Greatly appreciated. Pick it apart .. Thanks ... mark -REMIX-

As usual from you it is pretty damn good sounding to my ears. If it were up to me I’d take some of the bu vox out so they have more impact when they do come in but that’s just an opinion. Strings sound great
 
On the whole I love it, excellent musicianship on the strings.

However, the percussion and shakers in particular sound like an after thought and (the shakers) are way too prominent in the mix. I would rethink and simplify them to make them less distracting or dump them altogether.



You also seem a bit uncertain on how to end the song doing it three times and making it sound a bit clumsy.

Having said all that this will be great when you're finished with it and, as usual from you, fantastic work.

Edit: I've changed my mind on the ending somewhat, I wasn't listening right...

Thanks @BTStudio , I agree about the backing vox . I left it in only in a few select spots.
@HumanPlanet , Good call. Thanks for taking the time to post an example. I played around with the shaker and ryhthm egg for awhile . They both just didn't sit well in the mix. I deleted both of them and don't miss them at all. I think that smoothed things out a good bit.
The link now reflects a remix. I did quite a bit of automation on the vox , cleaned up some conflicts between the bass and nylon guitar. I also made the happy mistake of listening to the outro cellos with my headphones on backwards. It sounded so much better I repanned them and did some volume automation getting them sweeping a little better. I think I'll let this mix settle in for a while .. Thanks for the suggestions 😊 ms
 
Will listen soon... I look forward to trying SpaceBlender but I'm still being wowed by SSL FlexVerb!
 
It's a good 'un. I've listened to it three times, because although it sounds good (which means it *is* good), the space on the vocal pushes it back in the mix further than the first picking guitar. The cellos seem right. But I'd love to hear it with the vocal just a taste drier and more forward, just to A/B. (Then I'd probably say: 'No, no - you were right the first time.'):-)
 
I finally got a chance to listen. I didn't catch the first version but as it stands now, it's very nice. As usual, your playing and vocals are spot on.
 
@Papanatemate , Yes , I agree. I made some "slight" changes on the cellos. I Really liked the SpaceBlender reverb and overdid it a little. It's still Very wet.

@dobro , Good call . I've really been struggling with the vocal track. I kept boosting and backing it off trying to get it to sit in the mix more like the original track. Adjusting the reverb did the trick. I extended the pre delay a good bit , shortened the tail and lowered the mix. Saved it as a preset. It's a lot more forward now with the same track volume. Thanks for your attention to detail. Appreciate Everyones help. 😊 ms

Yeah, that was what I was talking about, and probably how I would deal with it. But I'm still not sure, because:

* I'm currently looking at a mix as a hierarchy of three levels: what you want noticed, the second tier behind that, and everything else.

* You can make a mix element more noticeable by tweaking the space on it instead of the volume.

* Although I've never made this mix move myself, you can probably make something more noticeable with an EQ move toward brightness.

* It's still mainly about level. If you want something in a mix to get noticed, turn it up.

I think all those things are valid mix approaches, but the thing about your mix is that it sounded good even though the vocal was set back a bit relative to the first guitar. So... rules are made to be broken?
 
FINALLY got around to listen. No nits to pick here, very good -- I guess this is after a few revisions and the others caught anything that needed catching!
