more info needed on the 3630

Well, I take it that absolutely no one here has confidence in the Alesis 3630. What I would like to know, in absolute layman's terms, is why? What EXACTLY does this product do that is so undesirable. I have one myself, but I am new to the home recording scene and would like a little direction here. Thanks.
 
what EXACTLY does it do? it fucks the signal and makes it sound really realy bad..look up the word 'artifact' and you'll see an alesis 3630 by it..IMNSHO
 
As ametth pointed out, sound artifacts... even in bypass mode what goes in is not what comes out. And less familiar to some people -- instability at the +4 gain structure. The circuitry tends not to handle the higher signal levels very well and easily overloads, becoming chaotic (sound breaks-up, distorts, chirps, etc...)

Overall there are much better units at the same price point, there's really no need to put up with it's nonsense when you can do WAY better. Although I'm personally not a big Behringer fan, others here successfully use their compressors. Another option is the RNC....

nano compressor

Is the nano comp the same circuit as the 3630, worse, better,same?
 
I have been victim of both the nanocomp and the 3630.. The nano does virtually nothing and the 3630 adds a strange sound and alot of pumping woosh..

Im getting a RNC based on the opinions and reviews ive seen. Its only about $200 but is supposed to be very nice.






BTW anyone see that tube compressor by HHR (fatman or something like that)?

I have seen pictures of that thing and it looks realy cool. I wonder if it performs as well as it looks.

Will the RNC hold up for across the board compression...if not, is there anything in that price range that will???
 
I use 2 Behringer Multicom Pros and 1 Behringer AutoCom pro
and their pretty decent comps. The Multicoms I got for $90.00 each and the AutoCom for $79.00 from Sam Ash when they were practically givin them away. I never used a RNC,but raves from R.E and bvelaria have me wanting to invest in one but I have no complaints with the Behringers.
I do own a fourth comp; The (shudder) 3630 and can't even think of 1 useful way to use this box.

Mr Q. Beleive it or not, I have a 3630 and nothing else (yet). The reason I point this out is that is in fact the same compressor I mentioned in your recording bass thread.

The most use you'll ever get out of your 3630 is seeling it on ebay and putting what you get out of it towards part of an RNC. You can at least get the R and half the N...
 
Dumb question RE. If the RNC is a 4-channel comp, does this mean I can comp 4 different tracks at the same time? If so, how does 1 go about hooking this up?
As it stands now,I use side chains on the Multicoms and inserts with the AutoCom (for stereo instruments ie,,drum machines,keys and mono instruments ie.,bass respectively)
 
I'll ask again, can the RNC be used for across the board compression. One more question if I may...what is the "side chain"?

Yes, it can be used across a stereo mix.

Also, look at the FAQ page at that site on about hooking-up the thing as well as side-chaining.
