MoonShine - spacey acoustic song

a Spacey acoustic/electric ode to moonshine, and it's after effects.
:)

i just finished putting my studio room together in the new old house i just moved into....
and this is my first project in there, with new monitor setup and all, i've got a completely new acoustic environment i'm going to have to learn to mix in.

this is a new version of this song, with added bass track and new mix from scratch.

this is the 1st song i used my new KSM44 to track with.

this features a Taylor 414 full sized grand auditorium, and a Seagull Artist Mosiac, mixed together,
along with a custom build USACG stratocaster doing the electric work thru an old mesa boogie head.
Bass is a Carvin LB70, thru a sansamp bass di, mic pre and compressor.

it is mixed for a softer sound, and is not mastered hot, so CRANK it up.
it wants to be loud, it really does.

how does the low end translate on your system?
this is what i'm working on with this one.
i want the low end to be full, but not boomy.

Nice sound you got. Spacey, yet country/bluegrassy.

I can't tell you about the low end unfortunately. I'm not listening to this through my good speakers, but it sounds nice from what I'm listening on.

Great track, really enjoyed it and I LOVE those guitars !!! on 3rd listen now :D

The low ends translates well on my system. This is insanely good. And you're right, it does want to be loud. So I let it be loud.

Nothing I could say that I want to hear mixed different

Really great song even without any drums :)

WOW! GONZO!! WOW!! Blown away by the sound quality great job man, nothing bad hear at all. ( I down loaded mix into my monitors) and I can hear the low end how you got it there dont know but its there NICE!

thanks man, thanks for listening.
let me know how it sounds once you check it thru your good speakers

cake
thanks man!
keep on listening, and crank it up.

thanks for letting me know about the translation.
it's tough to get that low end right.
i'm STILL experimenting with ways to make it happen, years later...........

yep, no drums sometimes throws people...
but you know, this is like, old school 70's style rock, zep or csn style....
and they did lots of tunes with no drums.

i've thought about adding some percussion to this.... something simple, like congas...
or maracas....

i'm just afraid it doesn't really need it, and i'll just cock it up.

;)

thanks man, glad you liked it!

the low end, is all about finding the level of low end you want, but subtracting all the crap!!!

and there's always a BUNCH of crap!

i study finished eq curves on pro releases....
then i listen to those songs thru my monitors.
i try to train my ears to recognize those frequencies.

then, i try to learn how to CARVE out the crap.
which means, the right frequencies, the right amount, the right Q factor on the parametric eq i use, and then how using compression or limiting helps or hurts the EQ choices, because nothing stays the same, they all interact.

Hey if it aint broke, don't try to fix it

Nice tunes as always Gonzo, mind if I can borrow the track to play along with the drums? Really groovy tune here.

thanks ninja!!
yeah, be my guest...

i'd love to hear somebody elses' interpretation of this with drums...

i just didn't hear any, but then again, i do so many full blown tunes, i'm always looking for something to counterbalance all the ones i've got wailin' drums on

Great song. Don't think you need mix critiques any more lol :D

bristol-
heh, right
i'm always fixin' stuff, i think it IS broke!

The Bats are singing about a different brew this time - well a distillation anyway.
LOVELY stuff, I'm only listening with h/phones as it's 9.58pm but it sounds really cool. The bass has definition, bottom end, balls and a solid place in the mix.
"Some folks like water
Some folks like wine
But I like the taste
of straight strycnine."

Well, let's make that
But I like the taste
of straight moonshine.

thanks man, appreciate the comment

foulphil
appreciate the kind words, so you say it's done, fork it?
heheh

rayc
thanks for that little tune there, very nice
straight strychnine, eh..... that sounds a bit bitter.
LOL

thanks for listening

updated mix 10-3

i think this one is a better version, with edited solo guitar tracks, new panning scheme, a lot of small tweaks that add up to dial it in more.

but

i might have reduced the bass guitar a bit in the mastering, still not sure about the low end translation now.
of course, it never ends.
LOL

that would be an easy fix, i think it's ok in the mix, but i used Multiband comp on the mastering of this one, and did not on the first one.

even tho i set it for a long attack, and not much compression, it might have smoothed it off a bit too much.
still on the fence with that one.

i left the other one up, just in case you want to bother with comparing them.
