I'm posting this here because I figured most keyboard players will know this already, and I most often hear guitarists make this mistake.

For those of you that know this, please disregard. But I'm sooo tired of hearing this mistake that I had to get this out.

(breath in)

The word/name "Moog" is not, not, NOT pronounced like the way a cow says "moo."

It's a long "o," so that the word rhymes with "rogue."

If this is new to you, please spread the word to anyone who doesn't know so we stop hearing this man's name blasphemed continually!

Yes, I've known this for many years, AND

I still own and use my Memorymoog (and Moogerfooger Murf 105)...BUT I still like to say "MOOOOOOOOG" like a cow vs. Moog like rogue. I just like the way it rolls off of my tongue...sorry.:rolleyes:

I pronounced it like "moo" for the longest time. It wasn't until Robert Moog died and I heard a story about him on NPR that I found out the proper way to pronounce it. But you have to admit, it sure LOOKS like it should be pronounced Mooo-g. Damn surnames and their rule-bending pronunciations!

Yeah I suppose it could, but if you've had any German, it would sound incredibly wrong to pronounce it that way. :)
 
Does anyone know how he wanted the product name to be pronounced? He may have wanted it to be moooog. Case in point: the Porsche family name is pronounced "por-shuh"; the car is pronounced "porsh". The family wanted it that way, knowing it would be easier for folks to pronounce.

I've always wondered that myself. Well, at least I've wondered since I found out how his name was pronounced.

Moo-ger foo-ger
M-oh-ger foo-ger
M-oh-ger f-oh-ger
Moo-ger f-oh-ger

Which is it? :D

Apparently some of his family preferred/prefer the Americanized pronunciation, but Bob himself prefers the proper German way.

I thought the car was pronounced "por-shuh" too. :confused:

I could have sworn I've heard that in a commercial at some point.
 
Tell ya what.......I'll stop by the Moog factory and ask. It's less than 1/2 hour away.
 
i talked with him several times at namm shows... i knew the correct way and used it... but he didn't flinch when someone approached him as moooooooog...

Well since the family prefers the Americanized version and Bob is dead, why don't we just go with what we all know and love...Mooooog.

So, this blonde is running a "Girl Friday" odd jobs service, and she's going door to door hustling business. She knocks on a door, and the man that answers it thinks a minute and says, "Well, I need someone to paint my porch. I've got the paint and everything. It's around back." So the blonde goes off and comes back in about an hour and says she's done. "Wow, that was fast," the guy says. "Did you put on two coats?" "I sure did," she replies, " but it's not a porch, it's a Mercedes".
