This may sound like a dumb question and i apologise now if it is but i have a Tascam dp-01fx portastudio and on the front of it there is an input switch which can be changed between mono X2 and stereo could someone tell me what the difference is between the two and when you would use each of them ????

many thanks

If you only plug in one microphone (or two microphones recording different sources -- say snare drum and bass drum), then select mono. If you are doing stereo recording (two mics) and want the tracks together (like stereo overheads or a stereo recording of acoustic guitar), you could choose stereo.

the guy above already helpêd you out but i'd like to add that
mono x2 is DUAL MONO,
thats like most compressors out there,
the dbx166xl for example,
you can put it on a stereo mix,
or you can put a totally different instrument left and right

the Really Nice Compressor on the other hand is only stereo,
its possible to put two different instruments left and right but they'll be compressed 'in exactly the same way' and that doesn't give us much controll
( a peak on the snare will also compress the kick eventough the kick doesn't peak at that moment....)
