really great G! excellent vocals.. very tight.. at the 1 minute mark it's kinda like the Chili Peppers with better vocals and more melody.. the bass is real sweet.. vocals is my favorite part of this.. very happy song!

I listened closely to find a complaint, and I found one..

there is a 'brain dart' at exactly 4:30 when you say feet.. the vocal combined with the cymbal equaled a brain dart.. :D I notice it a lot with my vocals, but it was the only one I heard..

I can see why it takes you awhile to post songs.. very high quality product.. your definitely one of my favorite singers here..

I'll be sending you a p.m. shortly..

KramerThanks a million man. Yup, im a bass player. I can play guitar, but not like you hotshots.... Yeah, the vocs are doubled. I did something a little different this time..... not sure if i like it or not. A friend told me about using compression only on a cloned track for "meat". I take my main voc track, make a copy... then compress the shit out of the copy. ...eq it to fit in any hole that sounds right and... walla. Im not crazy about it, but its a hell of a lot less work than manual doubling. ...thanks for listening man.

Thanks a million for that reply man! This is the kind of info that can help a brother out!Im gonna try this technique and see how it goes.Your vocals are excellent. Thanks again for taking the time to reply!

this is a hit coming in at 3:30 or less, otherwise it'll just have to be the 'album version'

nice bass around the the 4 min mark.

shorten it up, you get 'em droolin' for more.:)

oops..... ya got inside man.
F. Slip Hey Freudian... Im not exactly sure what you mean about a reverse fade in.... but it sounds cool..... tell me more.....

......burn away man:)

This is a hard one to explain for me so I will just say how I would do it. Pick a note that would sound good constant in the back ground (at the end) mybe the last note of the song? , record a single strike of that chord on the guitar and let it ring and fade out. Then reverse the wave form (here I am assuming you are on computer) and align the striking of the strings with the cutt (break)at the end of the song, then trim it up abit and adjust how it fades in.

Does that make more sense?? You reverse the strike so it fades in instead of out. Think the beatles: The Walrus right before he says "get up, get out of bed" That build to the break, only more abriviated. Actually think David Bowie: Fame. I think it happens a couple of times in there.

Just a thought any way:D sounds great as is.

Monkee Freakin' FEET!!!!

Wow G..............this is too cool. Really funky bass playing......I'm gonna have to get you to do some bass for me sometime. That's real nice work.
And I like the hell out of the tune......could have used horns but hey.......what doesn't? ;)

I like this one a whole lot.....a combination of a bunch of different funk styles. I hear James Brown, Tower of Power and maybe a little Sly in this.

And your vocals and harmonies are excellent. If I keep going I'll start to gush and no one wants that so I'll just give you a big ol' 5

I'm listening on phones before work over a cup of coffee....

Sounds great to me. Very catchy funky "pop" style. Mix sounds good on phones. Sounds like you took your time and gave some good attention to detail! Bass sounds great...gits sound alright to me, maybe they'll be more attractive on the monitors when I listen tonight. Singing is fantastic.
Sounds like a hit... Nice job!!!!

it hip!! You got a nice touch man. I like that arrangement as well. harmonies are good too, kinda reminded me of Joe Walsh and his guys a little. Funky bass... :) Like Lt said some horns stabbin in it would take it straight up!

Nice! Crystal clear. Beautiful blending of sounds.
I hear the Joe Walsh thing Toki said. Maybe Joe Walsh meets Peter Gabriel to put together a pop tune with an awesome bass player.

Since you are really looking for something...the last guitar chord. It sounds like the guitars are the slightest bit out of tune with each other and don't make for a smooth fade out. Maybe if they were panned center together for the very last chord it would take care of it. I didn't notice till about the fifth listen though.

First thing I noticed - extremely tight and intricate harmonies. They sounded great. I loved the chorus, but I'm not a funk fan so the verses were "just" ok. The great bass playing was nice to listen to until I got back to the chorus.

"Monkey feet don't have no brains"? Neither do my feet. :D

Just kidding. Great song. I loved it.

i listened to this over and over last night and here are a couple things i wanted to tell ya g.

there is NO WAY that a man who plays bass like that cannot cut up a dance floor. i don't believe you!

i always thought one of the weakest spots in homrecorded projects is the drums (including my own!). now i'm adding bass guitar to that list. to everyone (me included) who thought you could get away with a bass line from a sampler think again. that bass is outstanding! a lost art form from what i hear in pop music today as well.

thank you G! I bet everyone is going to be paying more attention to their bass tracks now! ok...maybe not....but at least i am.

As Dieter would say ......

This is my monkey .... love it ..... touch it !!!

I'm also hearing Tower of Power .... maybe even some Little Feat.

I agree with the rest of the board, the vocals are perfect. That goes for the bass to. I plan to give your approach to fattening vocals a try.

I didn't have any real objections with the mix.

This song a has a serious "live" feel to it. But, for my tastes, the production is a little thin (which may be adding to it's live feel). I think this song really wants some keyboards (and possibly horns as mentioned earlier). I don't suppose you can play keys like you play bass?

Hottest lyric .......

" It's fun to see a car wreck but not when you're the star of the show"

The phrase (about 1:14)" ... but not when you're the star of the show " is begging to be accented by a single, high harmony, background vocal (almost screaming).

Similarly, the phrase (about 2:58) " ... for the drugs they thought that I was on " could use some more lower, bass harmony as accent. Check out Little Feat's "Old Folks Boogie" for what I'm talking about. Sounds like you were going after that effect somewhat - I just wanted more of it.

All that being said, a lot of us on this board could create some killer productions if we had keyboard players, a horn section and orchestra at our disposal. You did a great job with the resources you had. I don't recall reading if you said that this song was all you. Was it? Drums too?

Nice mix ..... enjoyed it ....

:)

Sam yeah man, I hear that dart youre talking about...like a bullet to the head:D I'll fix that. I Pm'd ....thanks a million for listening, and being critical.:)

Kramer:) ....anything to help a brother out! I wanna say again what a great cover that was that you did man.... ...excellent!

MixmkrMan, I totally agree about the length. I wrote this while i recorded it (very bad move). As a result, the arrangement suffered. ....I just kept piling on... I may try to hack this up one of these days and try to take the excess filler out. Thanks for being critical man. I really appreciate it!!

FreudianSlip ...yeah man, I like that idea. Im gonna fart around with that. I dont record on a computer, but I think I can pull that off as a sample on my board. ...thanks a bunch:)

Lt.BobThanks for listening Steve:) Man, dont think for a second i didnt wanna ask you in for this. I just felt like I would sound kinda pushy. Youve taken the time to do 2 of my songs now, and i didnt wanna seem like i was abusing a good thing. If youre really interested in throwing down some horns in this... ...I am totally down for that!! I can totally picture a funky horn section in this. ....thanks for the ears bro :) !

SluiCe Thanks for listening Tom. Man, big guitars are one of my biggest weaknesses. Ive tried everything....., but with the tools i have, I just cant seem to get big guitar sounds that i like. I used a yamaha pacifica 821 on this, into a J-station.....Ive tweaked the piss out of all of the heavy patches, and they all always come out small and processed sounding. Chad nailed some really nice sounds w/ his J-station, so im thinking that it might have a little to do with the axe. I have a bunch of "heavier" songs that i would like to record, but with the guitar tones i have at my disposal, Im not gonna take the chance of "tainting" one of em by recording it in a way thats different from the way i hear it in my head. that was possibly the longest run-on sentence in the history of language:D Thanks a million bro!

Toki Thanks Ken, Youre a bass player too arent you? ...A friend of mine use to play in a band called dos. It was just him and his wife..... .....both bass players, playing bass. ....they did some very very cool stuff. If you ever feel like doing something "really" abstract w/ 2 bass guits..... it might be fun. I totally agree with you about horns in this...... .....consult the Lt.:)Thanks for listening man!

Fprodsouth Thanks for listening man. Yeah, I have problems w/ my heavy guits. (see response to Sluice). ...and i know exactly what you mean about the fade out at the end. I dont think its tuning, but rather 2 very different tones that didnt jive as well as they should have. I think the noise reduction on each one was set differently too, which screwed that fade up. Im gonna mess w/ that panning idea you mentioned. Thanks very much for being critical.

TripThanks for listening man.
"Monkey feet don't have no brains"? Neither do my feet.

Just kidding. Great song. I loved it.
....No man.... You "REALLY" havent seen me dance:D :D :D

dtbThanks for listening man:)

Eric :D ..Eric, my attempts at dancing when i was younger have scarred me for life. :D :D I am now the official president of the "Sit at the Bar" club. People my height have "no bidness" flailing their bodies around a dance floor. :D Your comments are very kind man.:)

BPOCO (sorry man, you got inside)....thanks for listening. No, unfortunately my keyboard playing isnt as good as i wish it was. I am hearing the horn's loud and clear though. I messed w/ putting some funky horn section parts in this on my board, but they didnt sound "funky" enough. They just seemed to drone a bit and get in the way. I do however, know someone who could do this ...ahem(consult the Lt.) ......:D I'll think about those vocal ideas you mentioned. ...much thanks man:)
Re: the thinness that you mentioned, I agree and I think i know what the problem is there...... (see response to SluiCe).

sounds really good guernica....

interesting song...i particularly like the last minute or so.......

OK...

Now I know why nobody listens to my shit. This song is too good to be on Homerecording.com. Would the moderator promptly remove it so us "slackers" can have a chance? :)

Very Nice

Dennis

WOW! I am sooo very jealous of your talent. Someday I hope to be this good.

Real Nice G

I still have the DL of the little snippet you posted of this a ways back. I was wondering when you would get it done.

Top notch mix as is usually the case with your tunes. You have a knack for getting your sounds without losing an ounce of clarity. I imagine you tracked this very well to start and didn't have to do a heck of alot to get it to sound this clean.

While you are a premier Bass player, your vox are especially strong! I am VERY envious of guys like you, Sluice, Jamal, Sammy, and so on, who posess this skill as I can NOT sing.

I can't add anything to what already has been said.
HOWEVER.............

I still have a vinyl copy of a dance mix of
"One Nation under a Groove"
laying around this house somewhere.

Man I love the funk!!!

Too bad 5 stars is the limit.
