I am new to home recording - vocalist
I am looking to set up a home studio - mainly for recording vocals onto backing tracks i sing gospel Soul and powerful ballads.
The equipment i have is:
1).Cool Edit programme.
2) Beyer dynamic mike.
3) Amplifier Alesis RA 100amp.
4) Spirit mixing desk.
5)Logitech X230 monitors.

I am looking for monitors that can capture original sound if this possible.

Yes...
At present i'm using logitech x230 monitors REPRODUCTION IS VERY POOR.
Is it better to have passive speakers using my Alesis amp or speakers with built in amp?

Like I say I am new to home recording, any advice would be helpful.

The amplifier is fine for running passive speakers. It is not for running active speakers which as you know have their own amplifiers inside the speaker boxes. The RA100 model will run 4 ohm speakers to 100w or 8 ohm speakers to 75w. You might be able buy a second hand set of Alesis Monitor One MKII passive speakers quite cheaply off eBay and they would work just fine with that amplifier. The Alesis Monitor One MKII's are 4 ohm resistance speakers so will run at 100w from the RA100 amplifier.

I wouldn't buy a new set, I think there are better options than that. If you could only get new ones, I'd sell the RA100 amplifier and buy a set of active monitors of your choice.

So that's what I'd do - first, look for a cheap second hand set of Alesis Monitor One MKII's and if you can't find any, sell the RA100 and buy a new set of better active monitors.

I have a set of Alesis Monitor One's MKII's that I bought second hand and they are fine for what I use them for but I think there are a lot better active monitors out there than them. But I only paid $A200 for the pair and I'm going to keep them. I've got used to them now.

Thank it is much appreciated.
I will have a search for pair of second hand monitors as you suggested.
I may look for new active speakers (£160 - £200) any suggestions??
Cheers.

I have a pair of Alesis M1Active 520s in my home audio workstation, and they're absolutely a great pair for monitoring. For a 5" monitor, the brilliance in the highs is pleasant and not as harsh as other monitors I've worked with. I bought my pair for less than 200 bucks.

Thanks, I am going to try and find some on ebay.
Cheers.
