You have monitors so that you can hear an accurate representation of what you are recording. If you aren't hearing your music accurately, then how can you make appropriate decisions as to how to eq or add effects and whatnot?

Yes. You need them. The best ones that you can afford.

Not only do you need good monitors, you need a good monitoring chain. This includes good D/A converters (most pro-sumer stuff has good enough, but things like soundblaster could be suspect), power amp (active monitors have them built in), monitors, and acoustic treatment. The last one is widely overlooked but IMO the most important. A $1000 monitor in a shitty room will sound confusing and unclear. A shitty set of monitors in a good room are at least predictably shitty and you can work around that if you get to know them.
