ok... so I've read where monitors are really important and that you can't use headphones for mixing... I've also read that if you can't afford devent monitors don't get cheap ones...

I'm in a spot.... I can't afford monitors. I'm scrimping to pay AU$200 for amixer with a preamp, just so I can record half decent vocals...

what do I do? If I don't have real monitors and I shouldn't use headphones...

use whatever you can afford. but dont use headphones, i think computer speakers would even be better.

Agreed -- you're better off with cheap monitors than trying to mix with headphones. At least over time you'll learn your monitors short-comings and be able to compensate (same with headphones but it's much, MUCH more difficult!)

what about speakers on a cd player/ stereo system via the aux input?

Yo Lascala-boy: [an opera?]

Your CD speaker system should work if its speakers are decent. They will probably be hi-fi sound good speakers but I think it will work out until your cross your financial mountain.

I have my monitors running through a Yam integrated amplifier that really runs two sets of speakers, CD, turntable [kind of an infrequent use] and two tape decks [they don't see too much use anymore either] but, the amp has a clear-through switch that eliminates any coloring from the amp. A nice feature.

So, start mixing and see what you get from the CD speakers and the aux.

Green Hornet :D  ;) BTW--congrats; you're my 3000th post recipient.

Thanks.. . yes lascala is the main opera house in Italy/Milan.. I'm actually studying to become an opera singer... I just like to record demos of the p&w songs I write, so that the congregation can learn them...

I have a panasonic 5-stack stereo which has a few 'presets' including 'flat' I assume this is the best setting.. without bass boost?

Yes, flat is good, and probably no bass boost (sometimes they cut the bass however, and bass boost just adds it back in... if you notice on other systems your bass comes out way too strong, then try monitering with the bass boost on).

Hey green hornet, would that be one of those there natural sound amps? I was thinking of picking one of those up to power my recently aquired Event 20/20s. At least until I can afford a Hafler or something.

They're always going for like £20 ($35) on ebay.

Yo Kevin:

I'll have a Laphroig neat!

My Yamaha amp is model number: AX592 and the words, "Natural Sound Amp " are on the front panal of the unit.

Here in the Colonies, it runs around 500 pezzutos "new."

It is a nice piece of gear for hardware. Lots of ins/outs as mentioned.

Cheers,
Green Hornet
