Ok, i want to buy a pair of monitors for around £200 or so. I have heard of Near feild, active and passive (active has its own power supply/amp?). But there are so many choices i am wondering will the pair i get make much difference??

any help will do, thanks!

basically active crossovers are pro and passive is consumer because with passive xovers the circuitry gets hit with speaker level signal (1-50 volts) and the frequency ranges will also overlap to some degree (not good seperation).
active xovers only get hit with line level signal (1.2 volts) and each frequency range is seperated very well also,so definitely go for some actives if ya can afford em.

also with powered speakers the amps are perfectly matched to the speaker.

most active monitors don't seem all that more expensive to me though....or am i just wrong!

you are wrong. They are at least 100 bucks more.
