This is a portability issue...

I refuse to lug around my Event TR-6's because they are too big and require too many plugs. There I said it.

What I need is a fairly accurate set of monitors for a very small mobile recording rig.

Suggestions?

Mobile rig consists of a:

Laptop 1.5Ghz Athlon 768Mb Ram
M-Audio Ozone
SM-57

:D

I think your best bet may be a headphone amplifier and a nice set of cans. You're not going to get much smaller than that, save the M-Audio DX-4's.. and I think I'd rather have a nice set of headphones over those.

I have the DX4s... they seem all right to me. Certainly better and more accurate than any headphones I have ever used.

You also have to consider - since we're talking about a mobile rig - what kind of recording situations are you going to be in? If you're talking about live or location work, loudspeakers won't cut it, you'll have to go closed-ear headphone. This is how I do all my mobile stuff, me and my trusty V600s :).

Additionally, for monitors you're going to need an amp of some type. Either as a seperate unit or built in to the speakers. Not exactly lightweight and portable unless you're looking at speakers specifically designed for computer soundcard use or a lightweight consumer amp.

Stick with the 'phones. They won't sound any worse than cheapo monitors do for live mobile tracking, are far more portable, and will work better in more mobile situations then loudspeakers will.

AKG, Sony, or Sennheiser, depending on who you listen to. All US$99 models.

I don't see where you'd need your monitors for on location recording. That sounds like more of a mixing/mastering need to me.

Just get some good headphones.
