Monitors Blew...looking for options on new speakers

The title says it all. I had a pair of 1st gen KRK Rokit 5s. A hand-me-down from my brother. So they're quite old...close to 10 years. A capacitor blew in one of the tweeters and now i get a robotic buzzing sound. I could either a.) take the time and energy and money to buy the part, soldering iron and try to fix it myself, or b.) cut my losses, admit that these speakers were old anyways and look for some new ones.

needless to say i'm going with option b.

i'm looking about 150-250$ in price. Maybe some new rokits (or gently used rokits is fine, too), or the alesis mk2s

thoughts? other options? much appreciated!
 
Not off the top of my head. But i just figured these speakers are old, and not the highest of end. Figured it might be time for an upgrade. also i have 0 know-how, and the amount of time and effort it would take me to open up my speakers, and make sure i do it right without causing more problems...i dunno if it seems worth it. i dunno how to even open these speakers...although after a quick peek, i'm gonna assume it's the screws in back. But still. I don't know how to solder, or how to remove or add a cap...so yeah.
 
If you can't open them up how do you know it's a cap?

Because i found a video where the dude with the same monitors got the same sound...so call it an educated guess. Not sure this inquisition was really the original point of the thread. i just wanted to know what you guys might suggest for speakers...jeez.

What you are using the monitors for, and whether the ones you have/had worked for you, is more the question here. You could likely find another pair of G1 5's for less than $100 used. I bought a pair of G2 5's for $170 4 years ago. I could sell them to you, but the shipping would likely be $60. You better off looking on Craigslist for something better locally. Jeez.

See, that would've been a post i would've responded too more generously. Sorry i snapped, i've had a shit day.

To answer your relevant questions, the speakers were awesome. My mixes didn't come out all that great but that's mainly cos i'm a relative noob at mixing, but sometimes i do feel like my speakers lied about my mixes a little (when i tried them on different systems, etc.). So my next step is to look into measuring the dimensions of my room and treating it a little. once that's done i'm sure i'd be 100% pleased with them as speakers. i really think it's the relative untreatedness of my room that is at fault for bass/treble discrepancies in my mixes (cos they sound fine on my system as i'm mixing them and whatnot).

Seriously, it is almost depressing how many do not even consider that (room treatment) to be relevant. Props to you.

I can't remember direct link to thread, but it went like this. I had one hell of a time trying to get the G2 5's to translate. Once I moved to the 8's, I realized just how colored the low end was with the 5" model. It's like a little toddler boy, trying to puff up, and be big like his bigger brother. All good when trying to be a man, not so good when trying to make mixes translate.

The low end is seriously hyped, with the KRK5" series. 'Scooped' is likely a better term. More like a set of really cool sounding speakers for your stereo system. The effect of the hyped low end, also made the mid frequencies, quite unclear, as there was a flopping yellow woofer, trying to cover all of the low and mid frequencies.

This was my opinion, even in a quite well treated room. Once I went to the 8" ones, I saw what the problem was.

Actually, the best news of the day is my friend has some 8s he's not using so i'm adopting them for the time being. I'll then need to buy stands cos i have no room on my desk for 8s, and still eventually treat my room...but hopefully the 8s will hold me over until i can afford to treat my room. In the next couple of days i'm going to scrounge up a tape measure and get the dimensions of my room + draw a little line diagram and hope that people on here might be able to tell me what i need where and how much of it i'll need.

Whether your room has equal dimensions (square or not), you are going to need bass traps in as many corners as possible. I can't even go into depth about this. Google and read. You likely can never add to many bass traps. And building them as efficiently as possible for your room, involves what you have space to do so. More so, if you have a small room, like bedroom size. My control room is 15' X 32, and I still have issues with 14 4" thick traps.
 
my room isn't small. couldn't tell you specifics till i get dimensions. and i think it is slightly rectangular (longer from back to front than from floor to ceiling or wall to wall). so in all likely hood i'll need at least 4 if not 8 corner traps. but i suppose this is better left till i have the actual dimensions. i'm not even sure if the walls plaster (which i think it is, plaster and/or drywall maybe), which'd probably effect sound too. i have one of those bumpy ceilings too. and one long window that stretches across a wall (roughly 6' long and 2' high) which probably has an effect too...so yeah. i'll take dimensions draw a little diagram and give as many details as i can.
