I have started a small home studio setup to record rap and acoustic projects.

My problem is..

When I have been mixing up rap songs in cubase (which has been an instrumental track and a vocal track). The mix sounds good thru my monitors, but in my car, the vocals are not loud enough. I have 2 subwoofers in my car and cannot hear the vocals very well.

Anyone got mixing tips for rap?

vocals don't come out of your sub woofers. (unless your Darth Vader) How much compressoin are you using on the final mix?

yeah, no vocals in subs. chances are your speakers in your car are not EQed properly. What do you have as far as mids/highs in your car? That's the problem with alot of people who want to upgrade their car speakers. Putting two subs and leaving the stock speakers in or putting some cheap/weak highs in their car. You need to balance things out. I know a lot of people who listen to rap like a lot of bass, but two sub woofers for a car? That'd be like putting two sub woofers in a small bedroom to mix with. In response to your question, try the CD in someone else's car who has normal stock speakers or in a CD player in a house or a portable one.

by the way Farview...nice lookin' studio man. Is that in your house?

Actually, it's more likely the mix is out-of-balance.... your mixing isn't finished until it translates well across a large number of systems. Check your mix on a boombox, other stereo systems, car, etc... if it doesn't sound good on all of them, your job isn't done yet!

If you're having difficulty getting the mix to translate well, it could be a problem in your room, your monitoring system, or a combination of both. It could also simply be your mixing skills (not having heard your stuff - I have no way of knowing!)

Nope it's in its own building. :) Thanks for the compliment!
