Monitoring Problem

I recently upgraded to KRK Rokit 5 monitors from some run of the mill pc speakers. I recorded a song and mixed it using the monitors, and the final product ending up sounding great on the monitors.

However, when i burned it to cd, I found that the sound quality was dramatically worse on any speaker that wasn't my monitors. On my stereo for example, the song sounded like it was coming out of an old radio or something--hollow, thin sounding, lacking depth and clarity etc. I compared the song coming from my monitors and coming from the stereo speakers, and the sound difference is night and day.

I know you're supposed to get to know your monitors and find out what it's exaggerating and such and then compensate for that while mixing but the diffference in sound quality between the monitors and my stereo system is so drastic that i don't even know where to being; it's not just a simple issue of boosting bass and treble frequencies. This is frustrating b/c i was getting more accurate mixes back when I was using my pc speakers...

One interesting thing I found is that if i stand up and place my head almost directly above the monitors, they sound pretty much like what they sound like when they are coming out of my stereo speakers. But I am not about to spend the rest of my recording days standing above my monitors while mixing!

Does anyone have any ideas about what I can do? Thanks.
