Monitoring Options

Denis,

If you look at my posts, you'll see Hi-fi speakers are viable option. I'll post some kits that are suitable.

All of these kits from Speaker City would make outstanding near field monitors. Not cheap, but you might easily pay 3x the price if you bought them in a Hi-fi shop. The linearity compared to a basic 20/20, Alesis or Mackie is..... well there is no comparison.

I would recommend the Focal units over the single woofer ScanSpeak kits due to their higher efficiency. The dual woofer ScanSpeak is a marvel. And the Raven tweeter is probably the most linear tweeter in existence.

Focal 7KT
Raven 7
Scanspeak 7
Revelator 5
Scanspeak MTM-18

Klipsch

Barefoot,

What drivers are in the Klipsch KLH10's? Do you have any mods for sweetening up the mids any? That damn horn is too bright. I little more low mids would be nice. Maybe I should sell em?

ps I might be mistaken with the model # might be KLF10

I believe Klipsch makes their own drivers, but I'm not sure.

From what I've seen and, unfortunately, heard Klipsch are simply designed to be LOUD. That's the best I can say about them. I doubt there is much you can do to save them. Put a couple nails in those coffins;)

Hey, that's the big 250. How do I put up my own avatar thingamabob?

Hey All,

Thanks for all of your replies and everyone's 2 cents.

Back to the subject of monitors on a (nonexisting) budget, has anyone heared anything about the Roland MA-8? Are they just computer speakers with a fancy name, or actually cheap near field monitors?

Thanks for the link. They look too good to be true. The kits for around $145 and less are especially appealing, and in my price range I'm looking for (if the refinance on my mortgage comes through, that is).

Right now I'm using a pair of Morel MLP 403s through a Yamaha A 700 integrated amp. My brother gave them to me about 10 years ago when he upgraded his home system. He's one of these fools who spends thousands of $$$ on speakers which his ears can't really appreciate.

Anyway, I think Id have to spend more than $145 to match their quality, but my purpose here is linearity, right? It may be a while before I make my decision. I'm still smarting from the gear I've already bought. I may check with you when I I can get something.

Aren,
Roland MA-8 = "just computer speakers with a fancy name"

Denis,
Yeah, Morel is the middle class man's Dynaudio. Just like Dynaudio the Morel midranges and woofers don't jive with my design philosophy, but I've used their MDT-33 tweeter in several systems. It's and outstanding driver. I think the MLP 403.x's used the MDT-30 which is also pretty good.

The cheaper Speaker City Vifa kits could potentially have comparable performance to say 20/20's, but I didn't recommend them because they don't state the exact driver models and the average builder has no means of matching these drivers which have looser tolerances than the more expensive models.

I would stick with your Morel's for now.

Thanks for the info. I'll take your advice for many reasons, not the least of which is that it works with my current budget situation.
