just a quick question or two

when i playback audio i have recorded through my DAW (through monitors connected to my interface) why is the volume less in volume than the audio mixdown? (played back through the same monitors, connected to mac by usb)

cheers

Maybe each interface/path is using a differetn reference level (-10/+4)?

Maybe your boosting the level in some way in the mixdwon path?

The first question I have is how your interface is connected to your Mac? Is that USB also? And are you saying that your monitors have their own USB connections that allow you to bypass the interface and connect direct to the USB on the Mac? Possibility #1 is that you are using two different USB drivers, each with it's own gain setting.

Also are you using different software for the non-interface playback (e.g. a media player) playing back the saved stereo mixdown vs. playing back in the DAW? If so, make sure any built in EQ or "loudness" button or stereo spread button or any other extra effects in your media player are turned off or bypassed. And on the DAW software make sure your master faders are set to unity gain (zero boost/zero cut.) you may need to take a simple test file like a 1k test tone or something like that (available all over the internet) and play it back through both pieces of software so you can adjust the volume on your media player to match the volume of the same file played through your DAW at unity gain just so you know you have the volume setting calibrated to your DAW volume.

basically im using usb to monitors playback audio from mac (itunes, internet, programs, dvd)

the monitors have usb connection

but to playback audio from my DAW im using jacks connected from my firestudio project interface going into the monitors L and R

is there anyway of selecting a different output bus in cubase (i.e the usb monitors) that isnt my the firestudio project outputs. obviously i need the project for all inputs. i know i could change the audio device every time i wanted to playback audio but this would be a pain.

cheers
