monitor stands

The foam may give some isolation but, from what I've been reading, stability is of prime importance: the little boxes are inclined to wobble slightly and anything that doesn't ground them well will increase & then translate the wobble.
Stability
THEN isolation ?
I can't speak from brilliant application however as my monitors or sitting on a stack of reasonably dense particle board, (spare shelves from a CD cabinet), at present.

I'm pretty sure they are stable, the polystyrene is stable and when I put the monitors on them I also put the thin mat that came with them (all that I was using before) which really makes them very unlikely to slip or fall off

Hi, my tascam us1800 arrived today and I rearranged my desk. Before now I didn't have any stands for my studio monitors but after rearranging I ended up using some polystyrene from the tascam box as stands. My thought is that they might actually do the job (stopping bad vibrations and making them more level with my ears), so any comments?

Wrap books in old t shirts or towels. Paperbacks are best because the binding of hardbacks vibrates. Gel bags used for sports injuries are good. Duct tape them together and wrap them in cotton, wool or linen. If all else fails or you're not dexterous with duct tape or fabric, try buying actual speaker stands. (Who'da thought of that?)

According to my friend here it's not ideal but it's better than nothing. Could you maybe hollow out of the middle so you keep as much height as possible?

hollowing it out would be quite difficult and probably make it unstable. that would be if I took a considerable amount out, enough to make big enough of a difference

I can't believe we have 5 pages on this thread about using styrofoam for monitor stands!

Recorded some bass two days ago, not gunna lie, the stands make quite a difference! really makes the music a lot easier to listen to :)
