I couldn't resist either... I already got mine... but the freq. responces for each speaker were different... (??? 
???)there was a 5dB peak in the 3-6K range on the Clio chart (which they provide with each speaker) and it was noticeable when listening... I must say, they did sound good to me... but I have literally no reference point whatsoever to go by, since this is my first monitor purchase... but since they weren't a "matched" pair, I sent em back... hopefully I'll get the replacements soon.. 
I must say though,... for 300 bucks.. nothing else comes close.. if a "tight budget" is an issue and you're in the market for monitors, I can't imagine passing this price up... which is why I didn't...

Got my sp-8bs yesterday. So far, from listening to them on the floor and on two uneven surfaces, they sound very good. Plenty of bass but very tight. Highs are crisp and clean. For $300 ..... I'm satisfied. Have to build some shelves to put them on though so's I can get them at the right level.

You paired the DynAudio BM5 with an Alesis RA150 amp. Why? I used to own an RA100 and they aren't bad amps. But for that kind of money there are way better amps. Look into Haflers. Mackie also makes a good power amp.

I love my Mackie HR 824s. I spent many years using NS-10s, and I would always have a headache after mixing for any length of time. I listened to a bunch of different monitors, and I loved the Genelec 1031a's, but I could not justify the cost. The Mackies where almost as good, and have a better bass response. (Which is good because I am now in a position where I need to use them for tracking, which I used to do on sofits. My new place does not have sofits, yet.) I have not had any headaches from mixing since I bought my Mackies. They are dead flat (though a little slow on some transients) down well past the lowest range of NS-10s (which are never flat in the least). They sound great, and my guesses about what is happening below 39 Hz (the roll off point on the Mackies) are rather easy to make. I must say, however, that the best thing about my Mackies is that I will NEVER have to listen to NS-10s again.

I know everyone seems to love the Mackie 824's........
BUT, I personally find their Bass response over exaggerated and coloured.....Sure, it's crisp & tight, however....it seems kinda false.
Funny enough, I much prefer the bottom end on the Yorkville YSM-1P's, even though they cost lest than 1/2 the price.
The Mackies are of course well made, and have good mid-range seperation, imaging, etc....but I think they are rather over-priced (in comparison to the YSM-1P's) at almost $2,800 CDN incl... the tax here in Toronto....
For only $740 CDN + Tax, the Yorkies are just as good in most departments.

The most important thing is to get a pair of monitors, and then LEARN what they actually sound like. I am quite familiar with NS-10s, and I have a good idea of what I am hearing coming out of them, but like I said, they give me a headache.
Here is the one truth I know about monitors. The most important thing you can do with monitors is to be consistent about what you use. It is important that you know how the monitors you are listening to sound, and it always take time to figure that out. You have to mix projects on them, and it also helps to listen to old projects and favorite CD's through your new monitors.
After that, it only thing which really matters that your monitors are comfortable to listen to. I still take a lot of breaks while I am recording, but since I got my Mackies, it is because I need to regain my objectivity, and not to down a bottle of ibuprofen. So I guess what I am saying is, it does not matter what you get, only that you like them and that you take the time to learn what they sound like. I like my Mackies, but you are welcome to like what ever you want to. This is one of the most subjective areas of gear choice I can think of, so I would never say that anyone had made a bad choice, only a personal choice. The only bad choice (in my opinion) is asking me to use NS-10s, but fell free if you want to.
By the way, I did not pay anything like that much for my Mackies.

they should still be $299 at mars music.. they were keeping the price all month i belive...i'm not sure ablut the web site but the local stores were gonna sell the sp-8bs's at 299 all month..WATYF said:

Kevzmusic, I'm looking at monitors at the moment too (and I also face the huge prices that affect us down under like Coldash, being from New Zealand), and I'm really interested in the YSM1's either powered or unpowered. What made you choose the powered version? Did you compare them with the non-powered version and if so, did you notice any differences?

Well, after listening to about 25 different sets of monitors I chose the YSM-1P's simply coz they really sounded much better than any others in their price range. Plus, being made right here in Toronto, was just a nice bonus. I'd rather support local manufacturers - eh
The active YSM-1P's are actually the SAME speakers as the passives - but of course without the power
The passives sell here in Canada for $350 Cdn a pair.
I use 'em only for PC direct recording, so I chose the actives, coz I didn't want to put em thru an amp....just connected to my OMNI Studio sound card...
They sound great!, and for only $740 Cdn (about $820 AUD) you'd be hard pressed to beat 'em...Personally, I prefer them over the expensive Mackie 824's that everyone raves about...

The YSM-1Ps have 6" woofers, right? Wouldn't a larger 8" woofer have a better chance of filling the lower mid-bass?

Please settle this debate I have raging on in my head for me. Does Kev really like Yorkville monitors (made right her in lovely Toronto) or doesn't he? It just irks me how you seem to be so "on the fence" about this subject.

I went to my local deal to listen to monitors.... i had 20 some CD's (everything from Nickleback to Chick Corea) Came out 3 hours later with a choice of the Mackie 824 or Tannoy reveal active...
Went home to think it over...
Came back two weeks later to buy the Mackie's And the dealer had a new set in the monitors in the demo room.... The Behringer Truth's ... they were on the rack right beside the mackies.... hmm? I run to my car to get my CD's (the dealer hangs his head)!
I A/B the Mackie's and Behringer's with many styles of music... even hip hop for the bass....
the Mackies has a slightly smoother high end at about 16k
$900 smoother .... HECK NO!
the Mackie bass response was slightly tighter... (and i mean very slightly) $900 better? NO FREAKEN WAY!
I left the store with the Behringer truth's and about $900 extra cash in my pocket

After reading these kind of threads for a while, I just cannot decide wether to buy the Tannoys that would cost me here $800 or the Mackie 824 that would cost me about $1450.
