Any opinion on the Roland DS-90A?! I just bought a pair today for a little over $1k but that's because everything in Costa Rica is way more expensive!!! I'm very happy with them, specially with the fact that I can connect them digitally and obtain 24-bit digital audio reproduction.

Carlos, if I were you I would have bought the Tannoy Actives because the ones you bought, I assume at Bansbach are way overpriced. And dude, we both are from Costa Rica. Talk about coincidence. jajajaja:D

Overpriced yes, and bought at Bansbach yes. :D However I really think that they are extremely accurate and look very pretty in my studio ;) Alonso, where are you at BTW?!

At work as well (sportsbook employee) but I live in Downtown San Jose, Barrio Amon. I own a very old house there and am building a studio there. It's actually already done, I just need to add some more stuff to it but I feel quite happy with what I've been doing so far. What do you do as far as recording and the likes?

I went down to SAM ASH the other day and was blown away at the sound quality of the M-Audio SP-8Bs. I was very scepticle about these monitors based on there price and do to the fact that they did not have the reputation behind them that the NS-10's, Mackies, Event 20/20, and the Tannoys have. However, hearing is believing. These monitors have crispy high end, nice mid-range imaging and very nice low end response. I produce hip-hop music and find the low response of these monitors to be essential when mixing any low end heavy type of music. These will definantly be my next monitors of chose.

Right now I am using the Alesis Studio II M1's. I went with this monitor primarily for the price and for the reputation that they had behind them. They sound nice but they tend to lack on the low end especially when you drive them hard. The highs on these monitors are also a little bright and the mid-range can stand improvement. Monitor placement and your room will also have a major impact on the over all sound on any monitor that you go with, just keep that in mind.

Monitors

I owned a set of Event 20/20 BAS, very impressive
I've yet to hear a set of Events I didn't like.
Tannoy's must be an aquired taste, you see them in studios everywhere along with a set of Genelecs. The Genelecs are, of course, sweet, but I don't care for Tannoys at all. I guess I just don't get them.
As far as Behringer, i have had very good luck with anything they make.

Great monitors

Shure, Mackies are great
but there are monitors so close to them you would be suprised.

I've bought a pair for 199! and I am very happy.

Stop looking at hyped top end and upper mid as what determines a good monitor. That will lead to many problems in your mix. The idea of tannoy is detail without hype, you get a wide and even stereo image and they tend to translate better than most other monitors in the range. Definitely an aquired taste. Theyre not living room speakers like event, KRK, alesis, etc Theyre meant for mixing.

Do all the tannoys sound similar? I have looked at active reveals pretty heavily, but are system 600, 800 etc way different or better?

Additionally, everybody has brought up the mackie 824s, what about the 624s. I have a friend whose opinion I trust say that the 624s are flatter and easier to mix on than the 824s (which he owns).

Anybody else have sucess/grips about the 624s?

Keyboard Magazine just reviewed the 624's in this month's Jan 03 issue. Here's the highlights of their review (including the HRS624 sub):

Pros --
HR624: Excellent mid-range definition. Small footprint. Affordable. Monitor/bi-amp combination.
HRS24 Neutral bass response to 19Hz. Individual crossover control. Flexable.

Cons --
HR624: Weak low frequency definition. Missing high-end sizzle.
HRS24 Large footprint. Heavy (94 lbs).

Wish I could refer you to an online version of the article... but I guess they don't have that -- the issue should still be in the store though I think.

Peace.

P.S. I went to hear the HR824's this evening (though I couldn't afford them, of course haha).... beeeeeeutiful :D I don't think your friend was correct in his assessment of the HR624's vs HR824's ... but hey, everyone's ears are different ;)

oh and forgot to mention.... I just bought a pair of Yorkville YSM1p's (I couldn't afford anything more).... so far they are great! :)
I wanted to at least hear the Truths first... but all the stores in my area now refuse to carry them so I couldn't, so I decided there was enough good feedback (and none "bad" hehe) to put my faith in the Yorkvilles :D

You left out the KRK's. I have, and love the KRK V8's. Got 'em gently used for $950 for the pair. As mentioned, the truth lies in your ears, not anyomne elses. Just my 2 cents. Peace - Mitch

Some of the $$ figures from the original post are incorrect. Anyway, you can get Dynaudio BM6 (not BM5) plus a Hafler P3000 for well less than $1,500.

Have you checked out the ATC line up

SCM 20 pro's or the SCM 50 pros,,,

if you like i'll post a list of users on them,,
