Just FYI...

I had some contact with M-Audio a few weeks ago, and I learned that they're aware of the need out there for a slightly less expensive sub for use with their monitors. No specifics given, but I left with the impression that either the SBX will drop in price or that a new (cheaper) model will arrive sometime in the coming year.

Best,

J.

P.S. For a small home studio, I'd probably vote for the BX5s for use with the sub. They're small, the mids and highs are excellent, and with the matching sub they really provide a wonderfully balanced monitoring source for little money. If you search the M-Audio site, you'll find some notable pro artists using that exact combination in their home studios--not a bad recommendation.

that would help, i'd like to have them matched up, otherwise i'll have to shop around, but most subs are not cheap

I just ran across the first pro review I've seen of the M-Audio BX5s and SBX subwoofer used as an integrated system. It's just one review, but it seems to reinforce what others using the system have been writing here recently.

If you're interested, here's the link:

Best,

J.

P.S. If you're new here, my advice: don't trust this or any review too strongly. Instead, get out there and listen and judge for yourself. Tastes differ, especially related to artistic stuff.

SLM-1 with ART amp = ysm1p?

SLM-1 with ART amp = ysm1p?
any dealers or anyone have experienced both ?

arent the yorkvilles passive ....what kind of amp are you supposed to get with those

The BX5s were the #1 pick along with the Yahama MSP5s in the latest Future Music magazine shootout. For monitors under $500 that is. They chose other monitors in the higher price arena.

one year and counting?

Holy S* you guys are making me F'ing CRAZY!! I have no friggin clue what to get for studio monitors. I've been reading about them for over a year here and I still have no clue, but one thing I see that makes total sense. You learn what you are listening to and figure out that your setup has a response for which you correct in your head.

And the other point I like is that you have to like what you are hearing so you can dig it for a long time and deal with working at it for hours. The other problem is that it would be nice to have a few pairs $$ like most pro studios. but this is 'home' rec bbs, so it's got to be a comprimise.

And that leaves me with wanting a pair that has the widest freq. response, and not too far from flat, and that I can put up with and that I can afford.

scooped mids or not I'll get used to it and adjust for it, so if the scooped mids are cheaper, I'm there :)

yeah monitor speakers...mmmm,
you sound like $500 or less range.

ACTIVE:
- Wharfedales at ~$275 pair, Deepwater deal
some concern with incoming workmanship..but 5yr warranty.
- YSM1p's $425 pair...high rantings too.
supposedly some can hear amp/backplate vibrate at some
specific low freq with your ear glued to the back of the speaker
...yorkies must be 98% positive reviews overall.

for me i can't try either of them, oh no,
one must ship and wait and hope the blue tweeter light doesn't vibrate the back panel off....
or else your out $40fhkng dollars shipping new $300 speakers around.
and fhk ebay, no thanks.
not buying someones junk broken sht they plugged into the
wall during an electrical storm or their little kid used for a potty.

now if you go with passives & amplifier....
speakers are 50% off and you can get a B set cheaply later on,

it's a new year after all! whats your hurry!!

there...that should help you decide! :)

your welcome. anytime. don't mention it.

Similarly, I learned a few years ago that John Leventhal, who was one of my heroes at the time, did the bulk of his mixing on a pair of small Radio Shack speakers. (Leventhal, a New York City-based guitarist, songwriter, and engineer, made his mark by producing Shawn Colvin's acclaimed 1989 record, Steady On.) Leventhal owns both a pair of Yamaha NS-10Ms and a pair of Radio Shack Optimus 7s. But he prefers the latter.

What does anybody have to say about the Genelec 1029 or 1031? Which of them is better?

you cant turn up the 1029's loud enough, if your using then only for cueing something up there fine (like at a radio station or something like that), or if your doing vocals only like dialog but forget recording with them. If you get the 1031 get the 7060a sub also they will run about 3500 to 4000 for the the 2 monitors and 1 sub. but there worth every penny

Wait....do I have my very own imposter now or is that just a coincidence? If it is an imposter they made a good point...if not then pretend this post doesn't exsist.

What about EMES monitors ?

Listening to the HR824 left me very cold. There is a big hole in the low-mids.

The Yamaha MSP-5 have hyped treble and presence, with no useable bass at all.

The Samson Rubicon were quite good for the price they ask for.

The EMES Kobalt were the best of the bunch. Very small, tight and excellent detail without the hyped highs of the MSP-5 and Mackie.

Anyone tried the Roland DS series?

I purchased a pair of Roland DS/5,s Active and find them to be very well suited to my Boss BR 1600cd.
Has anyone out there got a pair of these monitors as I have not owned any other type and would like to hear other opinions.

IMO the Carvin SRS6.5's are great monitors for relatively little coin (<$300.00/pair). The 10 day money back guarantee makes them worth trying.

Kobalt EMES

Hey TheDewd
Thanks to you I went and checked out the Kobalt EMES monitors this week and I have to agree with you! They are fantastic... I bought the shop demo's for almost half the price! They are German and better than anything else I've come across in there class that are made in the US or for that fact China too! Good flat responce on bass and the mids to highs are just dandy! :)

monitoring..for the masses... and my cardeck.

i like the creativeness of the EME's
thats a different design the smaller ports but centered around the tweeter.

i just finished a long article on subwoofer's in MIX.
if your EME's get as low as you want you probably don't need a subwoofer.

one thing for sure, almost everyone is listening with subwoofers,
cars, boats, homes, movies...

so if we aren't checking our mixes on subs...we're in for a surprise when someone asks to play your mix in their subwoofer Home theater system.
and there's this big rumbling muffled ASS noise at 40-80hz!!

Blue Sky Acoustic suspension and Sub for todays engineers and consumers, You may want to try those out?

Theres a huge difference between Dynaudio passive and active monitors!
The passives sound awful.
So id recommend BM5A or BM6A.

That is a pretty strong statement you are making about passive Dynaudio speakers. Just about everyone I know that uses them prefers the passives. Maybe you tried the passives with a bad power amp. Keep in mind that if that is the case than it is the power amp that sounds bad and not the speakers. Also, Dyanudio is tried and true. All of their success was started with their passive speakers. Dynaudio passive monitors have been in studios for years now and it is only in about the last two years that Dynaudio speakers have made a real presence in the lower end of the studio industry. 80% or so of Dynaudio's line is still passive. The majority of the major players that are using Dynaudio speakers are using passive ones. I would imagine there is a reason for that;)

active passives

i was wondering the same thing...maybe it was the amp used?

are the speakers actually that different between Pass' and Actives,
on the Dyn's?
