near field monitors...wondering about how high they should be placed? I have heard ear level before?

Also, how spaced out they should be, compared to how far back you are sitting, and also how angeled they should be?

I have the Mackie HR824s, my listening position while at the desk is like 4-5 feet back from them....if they are on the desk they will be spaced about 6 feet apart...but, I can change any of this..just need to get stands for them or mount them differently or something...

whats the standard?

Here is the general rule:

Close-Field Configuration - In a control room situation, the monitors are often times placed on the meter
bridge or in a close-field listening position. Initial placement starts by measuring out a simple equilateral triangle (all three sides equal in length) with the apex at the center of the listening position as an "overlay" for the stereo installation. In this configuration, the Left and Right monitors are each placed at a 60º angle equidistant from the listening position.

Your milage may vary, but that's the hard and fast rule.

C7- I dont recall anybody accusing you of being pretty. An asshole maybe... ;)

Wes,

Near fields should be positioned so that the tweeters/high frequency drivers are either level with your ears, or if the monitor stands/shelf are too high then angle the monitors so the tweeters point towards your ears...............this is because the high frequencies are more directional the the lower.
If you must lay the monitors horizontaly, then do so with the tweeters to the outside.

Wes,

Also be sure that you give yourself ample spacing from rear walls as you may be creating some artificial bass response. I have the Little StudioPhile Sp-5b's (Which I am quite happy with for the 299 mostly due to space limitations). The manual recommeds a foot away from walls. Something to think about.

fangar the hr824's have little switches that compensate for different rooms and locations :)

That's pretty cool. I have not seen those. I wonder if they are designed for room size or actual placement issues such as near wall etc.
