Monitor me

I bought a pair of nice AKG big beast headphones but the problem is that whist recordings sound great through them they suck on anything else. This is rather annoying! Now I use the crappy computer speakers becasue if it sounds good on them then well it sounds great elsewhere.

This is a problem which I really don`t want to worry about. I would like it to sound, well similar to all ears anywhere. I think this is called a translating problem. I have been recommended abrubtly to do my self a favour and get some monitors, but well, erm any advice?

Are they powered, do you have to have an amp? are they really expensive?

You see I have a very good pioneer amp which I run the computer and cd player through but if you use an amp then does that still not act as a problem? becasue it has its bass and treble setting etc.? Sorry for being stupid. But I would like the end mix to sound good on all platforms and no completely different?

By monitors do you simply mean speakers for the amp becasue I can get them easy? Simply confused.

A pair of Yorkvilles YSM-1i's would do you well, especially on a budget........

Erland, I use the Yorkies and bang for your buck (pound?)wise, there a pretty good deal. I'm hopeing to add some mid field monitors to my rig soon but there'll always be a spot on the console for my YSM-1's.
 
Theoritcally, any pair of bookshelf type speakers can be sed for monitoring. You just have to learn them, and it takes time.
First of all, make sure you get a good stereo image where you sit. After mixing down, burn the song on a CD or make a tape, and start listening to it on every player you can find - be it your car stereo, a walkman, boom-box, home-theater systems - you name it!
After a few listens, you will start to hear what frequencys are over or under emphasized by your speaker. My speakers, for instance, when set "flat" tend to lack in bass a little, so I know that my bass part is always louder then I think it is.
It takes time, and practice, but the results will arrive, I assure you!

There are many posts on the Mixing/Mastering forum explaining the hazards of mixing with headphones. I wanted to do the same thing myself, because I reasoned a good pair of reference headphones would cost so much less than a pair of studio monitors and still provide an accurate sound. But people who know a heck of a lot more about it than I do convinced me that I was mistaken.
I put a lot of effort into finding a good pair of monitors at a reasonable price, and stumbled onto the Yorkville line that Blue Bear and Track Rat mentioned. Here is a link to their site: www.yorkville.com/default.asp?section=3&level2=14&level3=
Once there, click on "YSM Studio Monitors" and select one of the four options in the "SELECT MODEL" drop-down menu.
I will probably have my set in about a week, and will be able to give you an appraisal. In the meantime, you may want to acquaint yourself with the particulars.
I chose the YSM1, which is an older style, passive monitor. The price is $196/pair, plus tax ($9.80) and shipping ($21). The YSM1i looks much better, and costs only $9 more. If you are unable to locate a distributor that can offer as good a price, contact me and I will put you in touch with someone.

I`ll take your word for it. I`ll check that site out too. Tell me what you think. Could you give me a list of the pros and cons that you have read about. Man I`m lazy, I should find out myself.

I really can`t afford anything. But I do have a good amplifier! so there is a start.

Does anyone know if they started distributing those powered YSMs yet and, if so , where to get them?
