I read Dragons all inspiring work on mixing down and not to do so using head phones. The 488 only has a phone jax. How do you hook up monitors to it. No info in the manual. It just say the outputs in the back are not for monitors????? Do I need something other than the monitors.

hey doc!
I think I can suggest a way to monitor that's just what the doc(tor) ordered! Go to Ratty Old Shack (Radio Shack), buy a STEREO
patch cord with a 1/4" phono plug on one end and either the same at the other or RCA
plugs (depending on what the amp you're plugging into needs). I bought an old Kenwood AM/FM receiver for $2 at a garage
sale that works great! You need the amp to drive the speakers, as the 488 doesn't have the "oomph" on it's own to do so. I hope this has been of help to you.

Thanks Chipper for the quick response.
However, do you plug the patch cable into the phone jack of the 488 or the out puts in the back.
Thanks Doc

All you need to do is run a good-quality cable (like a Monster brand cable) from the Monitor Outputs located on top in the back of the unit into the input jacks of a decent-quality stereo receiver, then run good-quality cable from the receiver into your studio monitors. All connections will likely require 1/8" RCA plugs. This is all assuming you've got passive monitors and not powered monitors, of course. Good luck, it's real simple.

I know I'm dragging up an old post but I just connected a pair of Event PS6's to my Tascam 424 and they sound great but I can hear no variation when adding EQ and effects during mixdown. I have the monitors hooked up to the "monitor outs" on the back of the 424 and the "line outs" go to my stereo EQ and compressor then to a mixdown cassette deck. Originally, I had the monitor outs going to the amplifier that powers the cassette deck and could easily hear my tweaks of the EQ connected in-line (inserts) and effects through the send-return connections. Course the "line outs" did and still do go to that amplifier. Can anyone help me figure out how the monitors should be hooked up? PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEZ!

Well, DUH!

You say: "I have the monitors hooked up to the "monitor outs" on the back of the 424 and the "line outs" go to my stereo EQ and compressor then to a mixdown cassette deck". Well, that's 2 different paths! You hear the mix before your EQ and compression!, whereas the tape deck "hears" the mix that passed through them! I dunno if tape decks have a monitor out, but that would be the place to connect 'em.

Also you say: "I had the monitor outs going to the amplifier that powers the cassette deck". Why is there an "amplifier that powers the cassette deck"? It was my undrstndng that only speakers need powering.
