Hi, i've been having a bit of trouble with a brand new set of KRK Rokits. They're basically humming and hissing as soon as I plug the balanced 1/4" cables into them. They don't hum when they're plugged into mains and they're brand new 6 meter balanced cables. I run from a Line 6 UX1 interface. When I play music through them they physically pop and crackle every so often. I'm at a loose end really, it's not the mains and i've tried different cables. The only thought I had would be that it could be interference from the 1/4" cables im running into them running over display and lamp cables, but then being balanced I thought they were supposed to prevent that?

Any help would be appreciated, I'm a touch annoyed as I've saved for ages for these things and I'd love to get them going!
 
Sounds strange, but have you tried the obvious yet?

Move the TRS cables away from any source of interference.

You're right, balanced cables are meant to prevent, or at least reduce interference, but still, it's worth a shot.

I dont understand part of your post though. You say they don't hum and hiss when they're plugged into the mains?
They shouldn't do anything at all unless they're plugged into the mains.


popping and crackling every so often sounds less like interference and more like a driver or buffer setting issue.
Are your interface drivers 100% up to date?
 
That part of my post was aimed towards proving that the problem isn't down to a mains problem or something, they're both on the same ground point and they're not getting any interference at that stage. So I plug the IECs in and turn them on and there's no crackle, so I can assume that it's not mains and it's not the monitors...if that makes sense?

My drivers are all up to date, i was wondering if it could possibly be a sample rate clashing problem? I.e. my computer has one setting, the interface another and it's causing the problem? I havent had a chance to try it yet but if the clock source isn't set and it's trying to do both that would cause some pops and bad stuff wouldn't it?
 
Well, I'm a bit confused here. The monitors will make a hum noise if a cable is connected to it, and the other end to nothing.

What exactly is the problem you are experiencing now?
 
Sorry, i've not been the clearest.

The monitors are crackling and popping during music playback when they're connected to my interface which is connected to my laptop via usb.

They don't make any noise when only an IEC is connected and they're powered up. They don't even seem to make noise when there isn't any music playback and they're connected to the interface. I've moved the TRS away from interference and still had the problem.
 
That sounds more like a buffer issue, or interface connection man. What is your DAW? OS? Try a different USB port and cable first.
