I just listened to drum oh samples on oktavamod.com of the MC011's and really love the way that they sound. Problem is, I don't really have a whole lot of cash. So this brings about a few questions.

Do you guys advise picking up a used pair if I could find them and modding them myself? Is it easy to do?

Do you guys know any less expensive mics that will compete with these?

Since my primary use for these puppies will be overheads, my biggest concern is sibilance.

Thanks for the encouraging words about the modified MK-011. This is an exceptionally flat mid-sized diaphragm mic. These mics are real sleepers in the Oktava catalog and not many have been sold - you're unlikely to find any on the used market.

The nearest alternative would be a pair of MK-012 mics which are very close in frequency response but are a tiny bit faster due to their smaller diaphragm. Next stop would be a pair of modified MXL 603s but these are about 2-3dB brighter on top.
