Hey guys,

I am a novice piano player and jam with a few friends who are at the same level. I record our sessions on my lab top and sometimes add vocals to the tracks. I'm using Audacity to record and I thinks it's time to move past the $10 computer mic I'm using.

Any suggestions on a decent yet affordable mic to hook up to my computer? I would use it to record vocals and a jam session.

Also any suggestions on an external sound card to connect to my lab top? Remember I'm a novice and I'm doing this just for kicks. I love doing it but it's just for the guys in the band.

Thanks.

Fuzz out.

http://naiant.com/studiostore.html <<<<< low cost mics that sound good in the clips i've heard (have'nt heard a vocal yet though).

a cad m179 would make a good work horse mic, although it can sound bland on some sources. bland might not be a bad thing, depending on what you're micing.

for external hookup, you can pick from usb and firewire recording interfaces. usb interfaces seem to get the most complaints but that's usually while recording multiple tracks. i'd go with firewire just to be safe.

The MSH line is a good choice for your instrumentals but you might look toward something with a larger diameter for your vocals as your get further along.

Your choice for an interface for your 'lab top' will depend on the number of tracks you are thinking of recording at the same time. The M-Audio line has a broad range of choices, none of them bad.
