Someone needs to start a business of driving a truck full of mics to people studios, giving them the opportunity to try the mic before they pick one.

In the meantime, I'd love some suggestions.....
I have a gritty rock band, we record 'live' and we're looking to possibly upgrade a few mics. Currently we're using 57s and 58s.
My lead vocalist sings in the 1K range but wants to believe he's down around 500. My guitarist plays Mesa and definitely wants to capture speaker sound.
Our budget is around $250 per mic.
Thoughts? Thanks.

Recording live? I just use sm58's both studio and at gigs. Condensers just pick up too much of the other sound around them. One other Mic I Have used in the studio for live vocals with the band playing at the same time has been a AT2010, very cheap mic that has the same diaphragm as the AT2020, but it is very susceptible to breath pops so you need a foam screen on it.

Different mics work better for different singers. Live (not recording) at my open mics I have an SM58 and a Sennheiser 835 set up. My voice sounds better on the 58 (takes some of the nasal out), others sound better on the 835.
Some people prefer the Sennheiser 609 for amp miking.

I'd say have your singer find a mic that suits his voice better, but keep using the 57s for your amps.

I'm sure our illustrious member 'moresound' (Henry) would do your 'mobile truck' thing, depending on where you are, and sell you the mics - at a profit - costs money to inventory and drive around, you know! ;)

Thanks for the input guys! You're definitely helping to rebuild my confidence in the 58.

I read a quote in here a while ago, something like "Every mic is the perfect mic, until you've used it for too long." We're at that stage, but we don't have the confidence to invest in something we haven't tried out.
