Mlx 990/991

New member, and fairly new to home digital recording. Looks like a good forum. Sorry if this is a repeat of another recent thread topic.

What the consensus on the MXL 990/991 condenser mics? Intended uses would be vocals (990), accoustic guitar (991), and guitar amp (991). So far I've been limited to a SM58, but condenser seems like the way to go for recording. Any advice would be appreciated.

the 990 is pretty nice. it has a nice slightly warm sound . it brings out the "ssss" but that was using the stedman pop filter. im gonna try it on my nylon screen to see if it was the mic or maybe the singer.
 
they will sound better than your dynamic for recording most likely. good choices for entry level. search the forums and you will find many threads about them...
 
They are the essentially the same mic, just different housing and packaging, i.e. the 990 isn't the a Large Diaphram Condenser as the housing would lead you to believe. That's not to say it can't do a good job on vox, but there might be better options. Both will do very well on guitars.

Not a large diaphram? But it's advertised as such. 3/4" diaphram.
 
Technically, they are both medium diaphram, 3/4" is around 19mm, the 991 is spec'd as 20mm. I've seen both apart and the capsules are visually identical. The schematics I have seen for both mics are likewise identical. Large diaphram condensers are usually 1" or larger, but that doesn't mean the 990 can't shine on the right voice.
