does the Oktava MK319 have sufficient SPL's to be a front of kick mic via tunnel, or even at the sound hole?..or how close?

I wouldn't put one near the hole. A 319 has a pad and you'll need it if you get it near a kick. I bet it would sound pretty good out about 3' in front of the kick along with something inside.

Sound Hole? Ive been routing my wire through a hole in the shell and micing without a hole...the hole degrades the sound...doesnt it.

i would say the most dangerous thing is getting a bad track.

first of all you will want it well shock mounted. the body of that mic is very ringy- it resonates easily when in a high SPL/low frequency situation. you might even want to do the somewhat common mod of filling a bit of the inside with hot melt glue to dampen the ringing. dont kill the electronics though.

second, i would use a pop shield.

third, the pad would be a must. and it might not be enough padding.

if you are careful, i bet it will be a good mic for this app. the 319 is a GREAT floor tom mic. one of my favorites. (oops i sold mine)

but even with a floor tom i had to be very careful to avoid the ringing of the shell.

I've liked it out front in a 3 mic setup. I put it about 3' in front of the kit toward the high side of the kick so it gets some snare in it too.
