Several months back I bought a pair of Josephson e22S mics for use as overheads. I've had some free time lately so I decided to check these against the other pairs of mics I have:

mk012
C1
NTK
e22S

I have assembled pictures and audio clips. Each mic has two audio clips...

1. A dry audio clip with no signal processing except some volume leveling

2. A processed clip comprised basically of Compression only (No EQ).

I took efforts to place the overhead mics in the same locations to preserve imaging. I probably was not totally successful... but I do believe the kit imaging between clips is very similar. I used the Recorderman Overhead technique.

As for close micing, I will upload a clip soon with the e22S overheads with close mics. This will include Kick, Snare top and Bottom, and Tom Bottom micing.

The audio clips are 160K mp3's. I tested both 160K and 320K and to my ears the differences for this demonstration were minimal. I recommend you download these and listen instead of streaming. The differences can be suttle.

Take from my effort what you will. I know some of you will consider this a waste of time... please don't waste your time and move on. Otherwise I'd like to read your comments

Here's the signal chains...

Input Signal Chain: [mic] => [Mackie 1602 VLZ] => [RME ADI-8 AE] => [RME 9652] => [Samplitude]

Mixing Signal Chain Dry: [Overhead tracks] => [Mixed] => [POW-r #2 Dithering]

Mixing Signal Chain with Compression: [Overhead tracks] => [Mixed] => [Waves C4] => [Waves RCOMP] => [Vintage Warmer] => [Vintage Warmer] => [Samplitude Limiter] => [POW-r #2 Dithering]

i certainly like the c22s the best, but it sounds to me like the biggest difference between these mics is their pickup pattern.

c22s are picking up quite a bit less of the room from what i hear than all the other mics.

Hey eeldip I'm not sure... the e22S to my ears has more air than the others. these clips may not show it though.

I have four more clips just lightly taping on the cymbals. the cymbal clips give a much better feel for the air and room pickup. IMO the e22S has pretty good Off-Axis response.

I agree on choice and I have been very pleased with the e22S... and not just as overheads.

cheers...

Cool stuff. I agree that the Josephsons sound best, but (probably due to mp3 conversion), I don't feel there is that much in it. There is one load of room sound in there though! I'm now listening through headphones without looking at the clips, I'll tell you which one I think sounds best afterwords :) Incidently, how do your Josephsons fair as acoustic mics (and what setup do you use them in?). Cheers :D

[EDIT] PS. Whats the kick mic? (And was it mixed in for the purposes of this recording?)

Hey CanopuS...

The mics are 42 inches from the snare, which pulls in a lot more room.

These clips are Overheds only... no close mics. The kick mic is a D112. Depending, I may roll off some low end when mixing in the close mics. One surprise is how well the mk012 is as a tom bottom mic.

I find the e22S mics really easy for acoustic. These are absolutley my goto for acoustic. I start with one above and one below the strings... which forms an equilateral triangle. Then based on the guitar size, I move around the Body Port to get the EQ (base-to-treble) I'm looking for (e.g. Towards the Bridge for less treble and strings and more bass and towards the neck for more treble and strings and less bass).

Cool. Got any clips with it in that application?

no, i think you might be right about the air, but it might also be that the e22s (whoops i called them c22s) also seem to just have a bit less in the 8k zone, which makes it easier to hear the 12k+ stuff.

anyway, they certainly are very nice sounding. very classy. if i had $1200 lying around i would be tempted.

Very Nice!!!! I really liked the NTK tone myself something about the way the snare popped, but hey thats just my thing. One thing I found that works for my drummer on the bass drum is actually putting the kick mic on the other side of the bass drum pointed toward the beater. I know what people are thinking yeah but your gunna get hella click, but that wasn't the case the two overheads being how close they where really pickd up the punch and the kick mic picked up the click and it toatally evend out just somethin to try. But not everyone will get the same result.

Have you tried them as close mics on toms yet? Albini uses them (obviously) and gets an absolutely enormous tom sound.

Nope... not yet.

I use mk012 as bottom side tom mics.
