o.k., i think i've just chosen the two most disliked l.d. condesors available, but they are the only two in my price range....it'll be mostly for vocals, acoustic guitar, drum o/h and room micing, so i guess you could say genereal purpose....

between the two, which would ya'll recomend?

other suggestions in this price area? nt3 maybe? dynamic (57)?

nb: (as far as i know) marshall mics are not available in australia yet

I dunno, I just tried the mk-219 and I like it on vocals. It would probably suck rocks on acoustic guitar though. How about a C451b for acoustic? I dig that mic.

I use both of these mics on a regular basis.

Whoever knocks the NT1 has not taken the time to learn this mic as it is very capable. It's a very good mic.

The MK-219 is OK. It can match up well with certain sounds. I don't really recommend though unless you are willing to understand that it is a mic of narrow utility. I like it for hand percussion.

I like the NT1 best as a male vocal mic and as a room mic.

Of the lower priced condensors, I really like the C1 followed by the NT1 and AT3035.

Why are you going to get one of these while the whole damn mxl line is better than both of these for arround half the price.

The MK-219 is usually $99.99 here is the US,

A good example - and Oktavas seem to be getting better in terms of their component parts, which have been a stumbling block in the past - isn't a bad LDC microphone at all, and it can be improved substantially by some inexpensive tweaks. It is essentially the same microphone as the MK-319 in a different housing. The MK-219 housing is cheap and resonant and can be improved by coating the inside with silicone sealer or neoprene and doing something to damp the mounting of the main phenolic panel holding the capsule.

Improvement of the circuitry and defluxing of the main circuitboard can also make a big difference in the way these sound. I recently had a fairly long discussion on r.a.p about these mods with Scott Dorsey, who services a lot of Oktavas. Finding the thread shouldn't be hard if you're interested.

bongolation, link please?! I'm interested :).

I can't stand ALL the mxl mics I hear including the v67. To my ears, they ALL have this characteristic "edge" / "harshness" / "bitter" sound signature that doesn't really capture the openess of the sound. This is ONLY my opinion, but that is why I haven't purchased any marshall mics.
My MC012's sound very good as drum overheads even though they're slightly grainy. Currently, I'm using a Shure SM57 as a kick drum mic, so if the MK219 (even after mods) can be used as a kick drum mic, I'm VERY interested :). Also, any1 know where I can hear sound samples with the MK219. thanks & peace!

Jeeze, I wrote that post exactly TWO YEARS ago!

I think everything that Dorsey suggested has been rehashed here many times since, and probably expanded upon.
