I stopped by a pawn shop on the way home from work, and saw these (sorry for the image quality - one day I'll get a camera):

oktavamk0121.jpg

for $29.99 each. Should I get them? :D;) heh. (kidding - this is joke)

(edit -- despite my thread title, these are plainly MC-012, not MK-012, as you can see so clearly in the picture -- I don't know the difference, though)

OK - I compulsively bargain with these folks, so I ask if they'll take $50 for both -- they huddle and say yeah, but *with* tax. Oh, OK. This is not the same place where I got the C414B-ULS for $99 a couple of months ago (and didn't have the inclination to bargain on that one), or guilt would be setting in.

Anyway, I've got them here and I did the pink noise matching exercise with them. There's about a 7db discrepancy around 150hz, and it's pretty good other than that. Not perfect, by any means, but probably close enough for me. Neither appears to have been modified, and the electronic components are visually similar when you open them up.

Also a few months ago, I was lucky enough to get my first MK-012 with a complete set of capsules on close out at GC for $50. On that one, I replaced the capsule coupling capacitor with a 1000pf poly, and I like the change in the sound -- I've got a few more of those capacitors, and I think the tolerance is pretty good.

My question: if I replace the coupling capacitors on both of these with two of my tight-tolerance polys, do I risk blowing their fairly good stereo matching?

Sorry...no answer here. But I need answers. Your profile says "htown." Where is htown? And more to the point--where is this pawn shop in htown?

Hmmm...

Good things...

Yeah, tell me that!

This bastard has managed to get even 6802 mod for free...

:D:D:D

Come to good people - Antichef spearheaded buying a guitar amp (mostly his own money) for the troops in Fallujah. I'm glad he's getting great deals - it comes with generosity.

Great to hear about your good luck, Antichef!

Jay

p.s. I should get to Fallujah myself in about 2 weeks...it's been a long training track so far, but I'm getting close

MC is part of the western export (UK/US) when the distributer was A.S.McKay. MK was the european/russian market. This is what I have been led to believe :)
No difference with the mics. These do not look like the ASM china ones due to the clips and the 10dB inserts.

good find.

Marcadiablo: - I'm enjoying it while it lasts :) - it has probably just run out

Whitestrat: - Houston  - the internet educates everyone quickly, but you still see more importance given to brand name/model and appearance than is warranted in a lot of these places - the same SM-58 has been sitting there for 18 months at $79.99 - you know. I also have to remember that the 414 actually didn't work when I got it home (even though they said they tested it), but it was an easy fix. Anyway, if you have a lot of patience, I think pawn shops are about the last place you can find sub-market deals (unless you happen to be the first to respond to Marik's modding offers :D ). In this case, maybe it was the MC/MK discrepancy that threw them off.

guitarzero: - heh, still trying to get some guilt up

Marik: - thanks again!!!!! :D

vincenzjay: - Hope you get to play through the amp, and it's awesome to know it arrived and is being used. Good luck over there!! I've got a civilian buddy who's been in Baghdad outside the green zone for two years, and we're expecting him back in August - his stories absolutely blow my mind.

Barks: - thanks for the link - I had seen that before and remembered the detail about the clips -- further inquiry tends to confirm that they're real, but you sure to have to be careful these days.

OK - I'll prolly give the mod a shot and re-run my test. Since I'm only soldering on the posts that hold the coupler cap, it's not too hairy. Like all these mics, these are fairly dainty/delicate, and not something I want to subject to my neanderthal soldering more than once, but I suppose putting the original capacitors back won't be too bad if it comes to that.

Nah! I don't think so. Everytime you post something, is a freaking amazing deal!! Next time your gonna go to a flea market and find a Neumann U47 for $20. Then I'm REALLY gonna hate you! :D

I've been bidding on ebay for months trying to get a pair of these for a decent price, with no luck. Then this. It's almost more than I can bear.

Seriously, great find. I hope you enjoy them.

I did the poly cap mod - the results are good, with one side effect that I might have predicted (and I probably would have proceeded anyway). The effect on the mics was basically symmetrical, which is what I had hoped for, but:

One of the things I like about the poly caps is an improved bass response, and that's what I got with this mod. Since the mismatch between the mics was pretty much all in the sub 200 hz range, improving the bass response accentuated the gap a little, making the mismatch a little more pronounced than it was -- visually, the shape of the mismatch curve is pretty much the same, it's just "bent up" a little more, if that makes sense. I can live with that, since I'm more concerned with the higher freqs, and the mics generally sound better overall with the new caps. Hopefully I can do some recording with them soon.

Once again, had a pair on ebay lined up in my sights ...high bidder ...looks like I finally have a pair, Oh Boy ...No wait, what's this? Outbid with 20 seconds left. Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Not again!!!!!!
